Joint pain - best meds?

I have been having pretty bad body pains/joint pains the past few days. I'm taking 6mp and remicade so it's probably due to one of those or just the UC in general. I usually only have really sore knees so I'll use an arthritis cream or heating pads, but since my whole body hurts its hard to use that on the whole body. I also used to use Aleve for arthritis but that upsets my UC and I find tylenol isn't really strong enough.

Anyone else with pains, what works the best for you???

I might also mention I take collagen vitamins and glucosamine supplements for my joints.

flgirl10, do your DRs know that you are hurting? It's possible you've developed antibodies to the remi.

I had joint pain due to my bowel disease that resolved with using sulfazine and following a GF diet. Your bowel disease is hopefully in remission due to the meds you're taking, so it seems likely that one of the meds is causing it as you say. I think this is something your GI needs to know about it. If the cure is worse than the disease then I think you need to find another treatment approach.

I am also posting in ostearthritis because my basal thumb joint has worn out the cartilidge. Cortisol shot wore off when new job required 80 hours per week, learning to not use the thumb as it is the only way it will ever heal.

Taking something for the pain does not sound like it will help me work so focusing on supps to restore cartilidge.

I get joint pain because I have Peripheral arthritis. So I take Tylonel Arthritis (this has a higher mg than extra strength) which helps but when it gets bad, my GI has okay'ed me to take Celebrex on occasion. If I take Celebrex I only do so sparingly because I don't want to risk a GI bleed.

I called and left a voicemail with my Gi and I have an appointment with him in a few weeks. I have talked to him before about the joint pain and he suggested possibly using celebrex if need be. I have had joint pains prior to using remicade and 6mp, but this is slightly worse. I can't determine if its meds or just inflammation in my body. The remicade has done wonders for my UC so I hope I haven't developed antibodies.

I'll see what my GI says and i'm going to try Tylenol arthritis in the mean time.

Are you still doing double the dose every 8 weeks? I know when I first started on Remi that my joint pain increased but eventually my body got used to it and the joint pain lessened, however I still get the joint pain the day of my infusion but I'm usually better the day after.

I am getting a double dose every 6 weeks. But I have been doing that since about November I believe? I had my last infusion two weeks ago too.
Sherry, how long did it take for your body to get used to the Remi and not have pains anymore?

Hi, for arthritis-like problems and joint pain in general, you can take Boswelkia Serrata, a well known plant that you can try. Google it and you'll see if it fits your needs, it's also good for IBD.

You can tested for Remicade antibodies, when I started to fail Remicade after 4+ years (great years) I ended up with weird joint pain during and after my infusions.

I second the Sulfazine suggestion, it is an old arthritis drug that also helps with minor UC symptoms. I had really bad arthritis from being on 40-60 Mgs for 4 months and then tapered to 0 over about 2 months after I had j-pouch surgery. It helped a lot while I was on Predisone but after my colon was removed I stopped the Sulfazine because I no longer needed it for UC.

After I finally tapered to zero for the Pred I ended up with aweful withdrawal and the arthritis became unbearable. I started the Sulfazine back up and in about 3 days I had no arthritis pain, I still had other withdrawal symptoms but no arthritis.

It's cheap because you can get generic versions of Sulfazine

I would say maybe a year is when my body fully accepted the Remi with minimal side effects.

I'm going to ask my doctor about Sulfazine to help with the pain. I have actually never heard of that so thank you for the suggestion… I'm coming up on a year this July of being on the remicade and I've been on the 6mp for a year this week actually. SO hopefully the pain subsides!

Everyone is different, I had no pain from Remicade for about 4 years, then something happened and I started to get pain from it until I discontinued Remicade about 6 months later. I know that Thoreau suffers from pain from Remicade were he has to take meds for the pain.

You may want to have your GI check to see if you built up antibodies to the Remicade; I think Promethese Labs does the test. Just make sure your insurance company covers it before you have the test, they can be expensive.
