Digonsed UC but patches of inflammation???

I had a colonoscopy and the inflammation was only present in the rectum and 25 cm in the sigmoid. I was speaking with the doctor about this and he said that I had patches of inflammation.

I was to understand patches only occurred in Crohns, and UC spread evenly upwards. So am I wrong, can you have patches of inflammation in UC, and only have it in the rectum?? Just wondering if anyone else has this situation??

Personally I think some of the meds work in patches. Many are on 5 ASA drugs and they can't possible cover the entire colon all at once.

If this was your first scope with no prior medication history then yes, I would probably say it was Crohn's but like Gary said...the meds are designed to cover the whole intestine but most times it doesn't. Have you been on rectal meds recently?

I have the same thing. UC diagnosis but in my colonoscopy report from February, it said that my inflammation was patchy. I asked my dr if I had crohns and she said that microscopically it was definitely ulcerative colitis.

I guess I'm just blessed to have a perplexing colon. Also, I originally had pancolitis where the inflammation went from my rectum to my cecum. The second colonoscopy 2 years later, I had just proctitis. Now I have rectal and right sided inflammation but my transverse colon was clear. Zero inflammation in my small intestines. I was not in rectal meds before my colonoscopies. Very random!

I just had a letter from my doctor about my last visit, and the diagnosis said I had crohns, I am a bit annoyed as I feel he either mis-entered the information into his PC or changed my diagnosis without telling me. That annoys me, also would having that on a piece of paper mean I would not be eligible for a j-pouch if it came to it :(

If you had the patches of inflammation prior to you taking medication, it's Crohn's. If it shows up after you are on medication, it's just that. The medication.

I would talk with the doctor to clear this all up. A misdiagnosis certainly not helpful.

Agreed I think I need to speak with him, sometimes I think that he may not even have thought of the meds, and I have been using them, but however I ran out of them a week before the colonscopy, but a week would not make a difference, or would it?? I expect that I was off of them for 5 days before the scope, and I did tell him that. Bugger I hope that does not make a difference, I was quite consistent with them right up until I ran out,

Here is my experience: A little over 2 years ago I had a colonoscopy. I had been on a huge amount of prescription ibuprofen for years. My doctor said my colon looked horrible with raw looking spots. He said he was treating this as UC. The pathologist report from the biopsies showed nothing abnormal. Doctor put me on asacol hd and I was on that for 2 years, 3 months. I stopped it at the request of a new GI doc, so he could see my colon w/o it being treated with meds.
Last month, I had another scope done by the new GI doc. He said my colon looked great, definetly normal. It has been confusing. I see the new GI for my follow up next week. He thinks my current symptoms may be coming from bile in my colon. I've had my gallbladder removed and it may be I'm not tollerating/processing?? the bile. Or, I do have diverticulosis.
I share this to say, I don't think it is always easy for them to know. And I certainly didn't know then, over 2 years ago, what I know now.
A copy of the pathologist report may help you.

My GI asked me to be off meds for 2 full weeks. My symptoms started returning at 1 1/2 weeks.

Yea they don't always know, and I did have a copy of the scope, coffeencake it sounds like you have been through a lot. Having a gallbladder removed can be hard on the body, my dad had his removed, and really went through a lot.

well I think I need to speak with him, still annoyed that he didn't say anything to me while I was in his office, god what are they like

Hi,
My case of Ulcerative Colitis mysteriously turned patchy on a colonoscopy. At the time I was starting to get better after my 12 year battle with Ulcerative Colitis brought me to within days of having surgery for the j-pouch.

I had used a combination of fecal transplants, prednisone, mesalamine oral capsules and rectal suppositories as well as the anti-depressant drugs Bupropion and a low dose of Doxepin. about 8 weeks after a sudden and dramatic remission I had the colonoscopy and it revealed patchy healing. In preparation for surgery I had a small capsule endoscopy (where you swallow the pill with the camera) to confirm I had UC and no Crohn's

I don't know if it was the healing process from the mesalamine or other drugs or maybe also from the altered bacterial composition. Perhaps I had even had Crohn's Disease (Crohn's Colitis) or even some combination (indeterminate) the whole time. In any event, I am better now and so I believe the patchiness might have been part of the healing process.
