UC got worse after colonoscopy

My husband has had a flare up for over a year. He was on asacol then switched to Lialda max dose. He is also taking Imuran. He had a routine colonoscopy on Wednesday he had two polyps that were removed. As well as biopsy taken. Since then has been in excruciating pain. His GI is not doing anything about it. We went to ER on Saturday and he was discharged because blood work was normal. No CT, no ultrasound. Today came to the ER again because he can not take the pain. He is already going 20 times a day. Loosing a lot of blood. With blood clots. Feeling nauseous and weak. Not sure what to do. He wants to be admitted but his labs are normal.

Exactly what was his condition before the colonoscopy? Unfortunately, some get worse after the procedure. Might be due to the prep or the colonoscopy itself, or both. Having polyps removed is bound to have some pain associated with it too. Sorry, but don't have any great advice except to grin and bear it and hope it gets better after a few days. If he should develop a fever I would get back to the ER like yesterday.

His UC had been bad before colonoscopy. Going 20 times a day. Loosing blood. But the pain just got like 3X worse after the colonoscopy. Just unbearable. Has anyone experienced worst pain after colonoscopy?

After my first scope I was really sick and hurting, it ended up being my gallbladder. I had a lot of pain under my ribs and around my back. As far as abdominal pain, I was experiencing that anyway, before the scope.

After my colonoscopy I had severe pain for the first, and last time, never had pain since, so I'm guessing its due to the colonoscopy, but if he is no better within the next day or two, I would let your GI know. Can he not take some pain relief? You have to be careful what you take, but there are some things he could definitely take to help, sorry to hear hes in such a bad way, it must be terribly stressful for you.

I had a colonoscopy in March and I got really sick after it . It turned into a 3-4 week ordeal where I was completely nauseous , weak, and ended up needing 40 mg of prednisone . I also ended up with mild pancreatitis concurrently . Last years colonoscopy , I had a fever and I also was sick but this time much worse . You may have an infection
Or the colonoscopy itself can cause your UC to get worse . It's a pretty invasive procedure , and if you were already flaring things can really get stirred up ! You need to do something about this before it gets worse .

Current meds- 10 mg prednisone , asacol, cortifoam

Wow! The pain sounds incredible. I'd get back to the ER if it's that bad. I always flare after a colonoscopy/sig or get much worse, but never in pain.

I hope he feels better and you get answers fast.

Update: still at the ER with him. Dr thinks pain is just because everything was tender in there due to his current flare up then them moving everything and removing polyps. They still want to make sure nothing was perforated though. So they are doing x-rays and CT. He is on dilaudid(unsure of spelling, sorry)for pain. Will update again later. Thanks everyone for all the help. @poppie does that flora stuff work?

i had the same thing happen after my last colonoscopy in 2012. i haven't gotten another one since because of that. i was throwing up so much because the pain was literally making me sick to my stomach. i had been going 6-7 times before that and it went way higher afterwards. i didn't even do the prep they asked me to so i know it was the colonoscopy itself. i called my doc and they had me get an ultrasound and x ray a few days later. it was just unbearable. nothing was perforated but i had to go on much stronger meds to get it under control.

Update #2: So basically I had to leave him because I had to check up one son. And go eat something. He called and said to go pick him up. When I got to the ER he was very upset. He was being discharged but no the Dr did not come to speak with him at all about test results. Instead a tech was sent to discharge him and when he entered my husbands room. My husband said he just started removing things without even notifying my husband what was happening. For example: ( hello my name is (blank) I will be discharging you tonight. My husband was like what is going on? Then the tech tells my husband you are being discharged. My husband then tells him well Dr hasn't came with results. Tech then says them that means all was normal. Tech then continues to say that basically they think my husband is a drug addict who is making up stories just to get pain meds. I am really dumb founded right now. Not sure what to think or say. I just feel bad I wasn't there. The worst thing about UC is that no one ever believes the pain and struggles you deal with. I feel horrible that I can't help my spouse right now.

This morning bad. But now he was able to get out of bed and eat something. Hopefully if will look up from here on out. Thank you for asking.

I hope he continues getting better. Those prep and scopes can be really rough, I hope that's all that it was.

Hi, Probotics are very helpful, many people with UC take them, VSL3 is very good also. I think they definitely helped me...I hope your husband is doing better today.
