I have been for 10 days with a little blood, mucus, and pain. Three days ago my insurance gave me the dose of medication but this time changed mesalazine (made in Colombia) to pentasa ferring Swiss laboratory. I wanted to start right away, this is dissolved in my mouth before eating and now I felt that becomes gastritis, colic and also some cramps in my belly. If not by the change in medication or previous inflammation, maybe I should give it time to this new drug.

My lab tests showed very little high level of lymphocytes and neutrophils.

Actually, Pentasa has Mesalamine inside it. It's not supposed to dissolve in the mouth though. I take capsules which have granules in them but I believe you can just have granules without the capsule. Either way it is supposed to dissolve in the colon, not your mouth.

Is mesalazine a Colombian brand name for Mesalamine? Most of the mesalamine brands only seem to differ in how/when the dissolve.

Some people do report reactions to one form or the other. Possibly to coatings or binders, but possibly to dissolving in small intestine vs colon ... etc.

I have not heard of dissolving in mouth. When I took Pentasa, it as a gel cap that dissolved in my stomach, and contained granules that were coated to dissolve even later.

If you are getting a reaction, Make sure you are not getting a knock-off Pentasa.

My insurance company wouldn't pay for Lialda or Asacol, I've recently started on Pentasa, and yes, mine are green capsules. I also have to take them 4 times a day as opposed to two times a day for Lialda. Just this morning, awoke to stomach cramps and diarrhea. Hoping its not a flare due to medication change.

PENTASA is the commercial name of MESALAZINE... that's the same.

I am taking the Pentasa (Ferring, Belgium) at the moment. They are granules which you have to wash down with some water. Definitely don't chew! They never dissolve in my mouth. They shouldn't.

My Pentasa definitely comes in capsules that don't dissolve until the stomach.

These loose granules sound like a generic.

Pentasa comes in granules I believe in UK or other countries other than Canada or US.
It is mesalazine/mesalamine.


They don't dissolve in the mouth, but don't chew them for sure. What exactly are the directions on the packet?

They're designed to release in the later part of the small intestine and into the colon.

The capsules dissolve in the stomach but the granules inside the capsules don't release until they reach the colon. There is such a thing as granules only with no capsule which also don't dissolve until reaching the colon area.
