Hi,
Since I'm new to this lovely disease, flaring about 3 months now, diagnosed 6 weeks ago, I'm not sure what symptoms can be associated with the disease. My main symptom was D 8-10 times per day with blood a few times a week. When I started meds, Lialda and Uceris, I was so much better with D 3-5 times per day. Minimal blood and spending so much less time when using he bathroom. 5-10 minutes vs. 30 so I was very happy. Then 3 weeks ago I got pneumonia, although it took them 2 weeks to diagnose it correctly. I am on day 10 of levaquin and although the pneumonia symptoms feel better I am so sick. My UC symptoms are worse than ever with D 10 plus times and blood and definitely more pain, which I didn't have before. I am also extremely nauseous and will throw up after a coughing fit. I am extremely achy still and need to take tylenol throughout the day and night to function.

So I know antibiotics are really hard on your stomach and it makes sense that I would be sicker with UC symptoms, my GI said so as well. But, it is the nausea that is becoming disabling. Is that a common system that people experience during a flare? I just feel so very sick and my regular doctor isn't very supportive when I tell her how I feel. Thanks!

Did the nausea only start after you started taking the antibiotics? If so, supplementing with a good probiotic might help. Actually, regardless, if you are taking an antibiotic, you should strongly consider a good probiotic

You might search this forum for posts about levaquin, and also carefully read the insert you got from your pharmacy. Nausea is not uncommon from abx, and lots of people vomit from bad coughing fits. I totally support the recommendation to use probiotics in conjunction with the abx.

I believe Levaquin gave me my UC. You should be taking megadose probiotics of probably 100 billion CFU's per day or even much, much more, possibly as high as 1800 billion CFU's per day. You should have a C-Diff test as UC'rs are more susceptible to that, especially when on antibiotics. Your current med regimen might not be good enough to undo the damage caused by the Levaquin.

Thanks, I bought a probiotic and tried it twice, but that is when the bad pain and more D started so I stopped.

Marauder93 it did start with the antibiotic. I was getting better after about 6 days, not UC, but pneumonia wise and then things got much worse. I am basically back in bed all day again feeling so sick. This is the 3rd time I've called my doc about how crappy I feel, but she just says that can happen.

I am seeing another GI doctor tomorrow, which was scheduled before I got pneumonia for a 2nd opinion so I'll be curious what his take is on all this.

I would call the DR that prescribed the levaquin and ask about the nausea. How many more days must you be on it?
