My asacol is coming out whole again

When I first started asacol it would come out whole, but as things improved (because of enemas) the asacol was broken up and no medicine pooped out. Well, now all the sudden they're coming out whole again. At first I thought it was because I was pooping 6 times a day again. Well, the enemas have helped and some days it's 1-3 times again, but even on the 1 poop a day times I see whole asacol s. yes, they're still full, I've checked blush I've read that asacol needs a certain ph level to dissolve the coating. Do you think this is my issue? Seems hard to believe my ph would be ok to break it down for six months then stop, no? What else could be going on? I'm using enemas and suppositories so I'm still getting the meds up in there...but what's up with my asacol?

Tough to know what is really up but this same thing would happen to me. Cleared up when I switched to different meds. Maybe you are eating or drinking a little differently which is changing your ph a little.

I believe inflammation lowers pH in the colon - but not 100% sure. Old Mike would maybe know best on this. But I would think you may have some inflammation going on now and this is causing them not to be dissolved and perhaps the other meds are masking the symptoms that you would otherwise now notice without them?

Just a guess. But I'd tend to believe this is what is happening.

since I noticed my first full asacol tablet in the toilet, i have taken the opportunity of being at home, and check my stool often. I have been seeing at times, mostly in the morning, FUll tablets uncracked, cracked tablets with most med in it, cracked tablets with half the meds inside, tablets with all the medicine emptied, and sometimes broken pieces of shell.

I have read that its not uncommon to see full pills occasionally, but keep note of it and tell your dr.

For me I see more full pills when Im having a bad inflammation day.
Unfortunately I have only had a handful of good days in the past 4 months
(dr.s want me to switch to remicade, but I am scared)

I switched to Apriso from Asacol because of this. Apriso dissolves at a lower pH than Asacol, and UCers are thought to have more acidic digestive tracts than the normal population.

Lialda dissolves based on time (I think?), not pH, so that's another option to consider.

I switched to Apriso (then Pentasa) because of this also. My thinking is even though Pentasa is supposed to dissolve in the ileum, but since the Asacaol isn't dissolving where it is supposed to, the Pentasa is probably not dissolving until it gets to the colon.

I have been seeing whole mesavant(Lialda) in my poo. Not all of the three I take at once though. I wondered whether t was a fast transit time. Are all our transit times fast when we flare?. I have been altering the way I take mine by splitting the dose and it seems to help. I am like you that I never saw them when I was in remission. But do we look as much when things are normal. Would be good if someone knew what would slow down our transit times.
