Any thoughts on methotrexate while waiting for new medicine?

My daughter isn't responding to her medicines, while waiting for Vedolizumab she will be starting methotrexate 15 mg oral weekly.

She will be stopping her 6 mp (has been on a low dose for years)and Will stay on Apriso.

Disease has moved up in the last month while using Simponi and symptoms are increasing.

Could this be a stop gap, it could take weeks to get the new med and see results?

I have been on Methotrexate for 3 years now, I am going to give it to you straight. Everyone is different, so this is my thoughts on it. It helps my arthritis, but no so much my UC. It is my best friend for my arthritis, but also my worse enemy when it comes to sickness. It feels like I have one nasty hangover for 2 days after taking it. But, like i said, everyone is different. Just make sure your doctor is doing regular blood work, for it can have nasty side effects. Good luck and hope it works for your daughter. Keep us posted.

I did a methotrexate drug trial. I gave myself shots. It did not help my UC at all and I did have a good number of side effects (hair loss, low grade fevers, nausea).

Is she staying on the Simponi and adding the MTX? I do MTX shots 25 mg along side my Humira. I don't think MTX alone will help much. It works best combined with a biologic. I have not had any side effects from the MTX

The plan wasn't for more simponi, but maybe we should try that with the methotrexate while waiting, though the 6 mp didn't help. At least the next simponi dose would still be on schedule.

Sorry to read that your daughter has these complications with meds, very frustrating to deal with & worrisome. Will she have more time for rest over the summer? (Assuming she has been teaching.) My thought is that a more restful spell might help her current meds to work better while she awaits the switch to newer biologic. (This was an aspect my 1st UC doctor always considered important for patient's improvement.) I wish your daughter could have good luck like another female member here who recently went to Aruba on vacation & won $8,000 at the casino ... she was having UC problems but still made the trip. ***Please keep us posted as your time permits. / Old Hat (33 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)
