true, that consequence is long lasting. but the risk is short term. the risk is shortly after stopping. not a year later.
it is a good question if short term shock/damage could not manifest until some later time.
I did read that you might be more likely to need some help from steroids during stressful times upto a year after stopping (even if you tapered). I would imagine this need for help would be larger if you stopped abruptly - but I am only speculating.
