I volunteer with a non-profit that promotes STEM education (science, technology, engineering, math) and I created a display of Nobel Women in those fields. What I found interesting is that many world-changing discoveries came from dedicated researchers in a multitude of settings: labs, private enterprise and even a VA hospital (no not using them as guinea pigs).
Scientists are the ones that make breakthroughs and it takes a life of working in their field, in places there they have long term financial support and freedom to pursue their research.
Donate money to graduate studies, to universities who give grants, give to colleges to support students who need financial aid and scholarships. I was struck by how many Nobel winners came from extreme poverty but they had a passion for what they wanted to study.
Vote for candidates who will change how much interest students have to pay on their education loans. There is no reason on earth the US cannot loan money at a student rate and throw out gougers who make loans so expensive that graduates can't afford to go into research (lower-paying) they have to go into Big Pharma to pay their loans back.
