high dose asacol causing chronic diarhea

[s anyone found that the high dose of asacol now recommended for a moderate flare has caused terrible diarrhoea? I have increased from 4x400 a day to 12x400 and after a couple of days started with watery diarrhoea with undigested food pieces. Gross. My nurse said it sounded like infective diarrhoea but to stop the tablets and reintroduce. I got better but when I got up to 8x400 the same thing has started again.

Hey komics, sorry to hear about that. I was on asacol and tolerated it fine (now on Lialda), but had heard that some people may be allergic or have a bad reaction to the mesalamines and have an almost UC-like reaction to them, with increased diarrhea, etc. I am no expert by any means, but perhaps you can ask your doctor about that if you haven't already?

Ah thanks for reply. I have been on asacol for 10+ years with no problem but never on this high dose (max 6 per day). It seems to be the high dose which is causing the problem but my nurse thinks the fact that I have never had a problem on the lower dose means it is unlikely that ithe high dose s causing the worsening symptoms. All so confusing - but I know one thing for sure - I have never been this bad!

FYI, I am fine on 2 Lialda but anymore causes symptoms. I disagree with your nurse.
