I am just wondering if there is anyone else out there with both type 1 diabetes and ulcerative colitis? I have both. I was diagnosed with diabetes when I was a kid and recently, 2013, have been diagnosed with UC. Maybe we could share advice/experiences having both immune disorders?

I have both! I just got diagnosed with type 1.5 diabetes about 2 months ago. I stopped eating all grains and I haven't had a number over 140 since. Most are under 120. I'm not taking insulin yet. Don't know how long this honeymoon will last, but I figured grain free might help both conditions as well as stop me from developing another autoimmune disease.

Diagnosed Type 1 in 1979 and UC in 1997. I've been using an insulin pump for the past 11 years. Makes things easier.

They both suck, but UC sucks more.

Yeah I am used to the diabetes since I have had it for so long but the UC not so much. I have only ever taken injections. My insurance does not seem to want to cover pumps. At least not at a reasonable cost for me.

Has anyone's diabetes affected their UC or vise versa? I definitely know how the steroids affect my blood sugars. On predisone they were all over the place! On Uceris now and they seem to be normal.

Type 1.5 is adult onset diabetes. They usually don't need insulin at first but eventually may need to take some insulin. Not like type 1's though who need to start taking insulin at diagnosis.

Normally my diabetes is well controlled but all types of steroids raise my blood sugar...prednisone, uceris, and even the hydrocortisone enemas which aren't supposed to have a systemic effect. I almost have to double my insulin doses when on steroids because I'll be in the 300's.

I took a single prednisone a few days after I was diagnosed. It shot my BS up too 500.

I never took another one!!
