Hi Helpingmykids96,
My son was diagnosed a five years ago with pan Colitis, he is now 16 and has been flare free for two years.
It is a huge worry at the start, it still is, but with this site your knowledge will grow and so will your hope.
At the beginning we started a food diary to see if anything obvious stood out as an aggressive food, to be fair nothing really did. But we switched to lactose free milk and dropped gluten anyway. We avoided certain veggies and fruits, we peeled apples etc we just dropped as much as we could that was known to be rough on the colon. That especially goes for junk food, burgers, pizzas, sugars and fizzy drinks, ice creams etc, although he does get treats now, probably more than I actually know about.
We heard about the value of strong probiotics, and my lad now takes VSL3, we give him L Glutamine supplement to assist with colon repair, Vit D (we live in Scotland/dark winters), Strong Omega 3s and we did give him slippery elm way back (we keep it as part of the rapid response first aid kit now)
He is still using salofalk foam enemas, but only 2 - 3 times weekly now, that stuff really is the business, and very easy to retain. he also takes 6 x Pentasa tablets daily.
To start with you feel you are at the bottom of a huge mountain, you feel helpless, you have lost control. But have faith, this site is a gold mine, for sure it seems things contradict each other, that's because we are all slightly different, there are some things that seem to be common amongst us all (I have colitis too) and then other things vary from person to person.
To start with cut out irritant foods, drink plenty filtered/bottled water, get in some probiotics and some supplements. stick with the meds.
Tell him not to push or strain on the toilet, the feeling of needing to go is a swollen rectum, it makes you think you are constipated and never empty, and if you keep pushing you will just cause more rupturing and bleeding, and the slightest blood touching this inflammation makes you think the mother of all downloads is coming. We used an anesthetic cream for the ass to help take away the feeling of urgency's, helps to give you some respite and allows you to get to sleep at night.
Read your ass off and good luck to you both.
Steve
