We would like to start thinking of baby #2..... I have finally reached what I hope is remission from Remicade infusions every 8 weeks. I would love to hear from anyone who has had a successful pregnancy while on Remicade and/or any info regarding safety etc. I am scared to go off it and flare or build antibodies.

I had a major flare after my first pregnancy and after trying different medications and trying to get pregnant without success I started Remicade in July 2012. I was pregnant by September. I was extremely nervous about taking remicade while pregnant, but I had no problems at all. My daughter is 14 months old and perfectly healthy. My pregnancy was uneventful. I did have to have a few more ultrasounds than normal because they wanted to make sure the baby was growing at the right rate, but that was it.

From what I've read here and elsewhere (check out infantrisk.org for more info) Remicade does not cross the placenta and everyone recommends staying on it while pregnant to prevent an IBD flare. There is some planning that needs to happen as you get close to delivery, but other than that, there are no issues with Remi during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

When I was on Remicade and had a positive preg test, my GI told me to abort. I disagreed.

A few days later I bled.

My understanding is that remicade doesn't cross the placenta until the third trimester. I've heard that they may mess with your dosing schedule so that you can get an infusion just before you enter the third trimester, then get another one right after you deliver.

We heard bad news from longtime forum member Beth75 last winter due to the change in Remicade dosing during her last trimester. She flared badly and had an emergency c-section at about 26 weeks, with loss of 1 of the fraternal twins she was carrying. I'm worried because we haven't heard from her since she posted about getting C.diff after her surgery, while her surviving baby was still in intensive care. Mainly be cautious about the possible risks and make sure your gastroenterologist and obstetrician would cooperate to manage your care during a Remicade pregnancy. / Old Hat (33 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)
