Do enemas or suppositories help with pancolitis?

I currently take Asacol HD and I feel fine, but the doctor said my last two blood tests showed more active inflammation. He wants to put me on Imuran, but I want to see if something else will help.

I have never used anything else but Asacol except one time I did use prednisone for two months.

Yes. They do a great job at treating the rectum and distal colon, which the oral meds sometimes don't work all that well on.

No, enemas and suppositories do NOT treat pancolitis. Maybe fruitgirl misread the question. They can be used in ADDITION to oral meds, but they alone will not treat pancolitis.

No, I didn't misread it and I don't think the OP was asking if they would work just by themselves. I never said they alone would treat pancolitis -- I said they'd do a great job at treating the rectum and distal colon. There have been a handful of people with pancolitis on here say that their doctor told them it was useless to even try rectal meds.

I have pancolitis and I have to take the maximum dose of Lialda plus an mesalamine enema at night and a suppository in the morning. Flares start in the rectum and Lialda does reach that far down.

Yes, but its still not treating pancolitis; they will only actually treat proctitis and proctosigmoiditis (which are included in pancolitis). I guess were arguing semantics though, because were both saying the same thing :p

Thanks for your replies. Yes, I wanted to know if enemas/suppositories would help "in addition" to the Asacol I am already taking. I don't want to start Imuran, but I need something else to get my blood count for the inflammation back down. I wanted to know if it was worth the expense and hassle to try them if they wouldn't help with someone that has the entire colon involved.
