I don't know how to help my daughter.
When she was first diagnosed at 15 she was put on Asacol HD 12 pills a day she developed pancreatitis and was put in hospital for a week. She was given prednisone and 6mp, reached remission for 3years.
She started college and started to flare up again. Her new adult GI put her on Canasa , made her diarrhea worse and she developed internal hemorrhoids. Lots of pain. Her Dr next put her on Apriso 4capsules a day. The first day she took it, after 5hours she became very sick, vomiting , nausea and diarrhea. I felt like she was having an intolerance to it so I took her to hospital and she had a cdiff infection as well as campylobacter. She was in the hospital for a week.
Finally feeling like herself with no diarrhea or blood, her Dr wanted her to Try Apriso again, this time we tried 2 pills and the diarrhea started and nausea and vomiting. She tried again 2 days later with only 1pill and she became constipated and bloated, she couldn't pass gas. We increased her fiber and after 2 days she finally went. We stopped it. During all this time she continued the 6mp therapy. She didn't go back to her Dr for almost 4months until last week because she is starting to have problems of urgency 4x a day and some blood.
Her Dr this time wanted her to try Lialda. I was afraid for her to take the 4 pills that her Dr suggested so I told her to take 1. The diarrhea began, but the blood pain went away. She has been on it 5 days and she gets up every hour of the night too, even vomitted and diarrhea at the same time. The only thing that it has helped is pain. She is very weak. I called the Dr yesterday and she wanted her to stop the lialda and now she wants her to try the Canasa. My daughter doesn't want to do that again because of the pain. She broke down today :(
I told her" let's try the Apriso again, but only 1 maybe it's just too much medicine for your body and the last time you took only 1 you were constipated". Well she just called me and now has "bubble guts" as she calls them.
I don't know what else to do. Her recent colonoscopy last year showed mild left side inflammation and internal hemmorroids, inflammation in her rectum. She is starting to have pain in her rectum now.
Her symptoms are bad but the inflammation is mild to moderate. What other therapies are there? Can she build up a tolerance to meslamine?
