Thyroid problem with colitis

I had my usual appointment with my gi today, and she said my daughter may have thyroid issue after looking at her and has ordered some blood tests. As if my current sufferings are not enough, this additional issue is bothering me more. Is thyroid problem because of 6MP, steroids or mesalamine or is it associated with UC?

Do you know what blood tests were ordered? There are autoimmune thyroid diseases (Graves' and Hashimoto's) that can be associated with UC or any other autoimmune disease, but specific antibodies tests would be needed to diagnose them. If the doctor only ordered TSH and T3 or T4 testing it's possible an autoimmune thyroid disease can go undetected.

I've had hypothryrodism since I was 14 years old. I got UC when I was 26. Completley unrelated. If your daughter ends up having low or high TSH T3 or T4 she will only have to take a pill to correct it. No biggie at all! I don't even think about about thyroid! I just get it checked with my yearly blood work.

Keep us updated on what the tests say. And don't worry to much.

She ordered just TSH and T3 and T4. Are there any special test for auto immune thyorid problem?

kamakya, if the doctor suspected Hashimoto's was a possibility they'd want to test her TPO antibodies and thyroglobulin antibodies. For Graves' the tests would be TSI antibodies and TRAb.
