Diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis yesterday. Needs some answer

Hi I am new here 29 year old from the Philippines with a great looking son :)

Just want to now if i will die from UC?
Does my life expectancy dropped from a normal person without UC?
My exact Diagnosis in Inflamatory Bowel Disease, Ulcerative Colitis (proctitis)
Is there a certain part of your abdomen hurt? mine is on upper right with some side and back pain (Liver is ok as per labs ct-scan, ultrasound)

Yes it is proctitis. i was prescribed with Pentasa 500MG 3xday..

Enemas? My GI didn't mention any of it.

My next checkup will be next year Feb 2015..6 months form now? is it too long for a return checkup?

Thanks, I will try to google Enemas and I will mentioned it to my GI once I had a checkup.

He mentioned that anytime that i have any trace of blood in my bowel i can schedule an appointment hopefully not.

Also once i take the meds (pentasa) should the blood go away immediately? i don't have blood daily in my bowel i just have right side pain.

Also does some of you have dark/black bowel, I sometimes have that but i am not sure if it is because what i have eaten the night before

Already had an endoscopy and it was fine. the colonoscopy show the proctitis.. anyway i will try to observe first if the dark bowel. I already mention this to my GI and he says if it persist for three days i should see him right away.

thanks for the information i feel so much lighter that i am not alone (not that i am happy that you also have UC)

reading other post encourages me that i can win this battle against UC for my wife and son.

Thanks Levi, I will mention that on my next consultation I am new a this and and i thought what i will be taking is already more than enough.

Can someone give me links how to administer enemas, it is quit popular here hahaha might as well try it?

do i need prescription for it? is there side-effects? as much as possible i want to lessen the meds i am taking due to that i have history of high liver enzymes but now its normal just don't want to trigger it again.

Haha yes they are. Not because they're fun, but because they work. There is really nothing to them. If you do them for a week it will be routine. Shower, brush teeth, do enema...

There is usually a picture or two that come with the enemas showing the proper position and all that. I was nervous when I got my prescription also. What I do it lay on my left side and pull my right leg up towards my stomach and do the enema with my right hand. Just squeeze the middle of the bottle with your thumb and index finger. You probably need to fold the bottom over once or twice to get the last third of the liquid out. There will still be a little bit left every time, it's no big deal, you are not going to get all the medicine out. I try to lay on my left side for at least 10 minutes so it will drain down (up?) as far as possible in my colon.

Oh, there is a little stuff on the enema tip but I always use a little Vaseline too. I was on a trip one night last week and forgot it and it was kind of painful getting it in.

some smart docs (yes, there are some) like to use an aggressive approach to treating uc - the goal is to reduce the inflammation as quickly as possible to help promote quicker healing -

I would suggest not waiting too long before making changes - too often your colon wants to go on a hellish joy ride when you're not looking ;-)

So far it looks like your treatment plan is woefully inadequate and to have you come back in six months after a woefully inadequate treatment plan seems like a recipe for disaster.

I fully believe my flare could have been stopped early on when I was diagnosed with left sided UC with minor inflammation. My doctor did not prescribe enemas right away because he said they are "messy" and didn't think they would be necessary. They are the only thing that I know works for me at this point. They aren't messy, I can understand people not looking forward to doing them, but after going through a sever flare, there is not much that's not worth trying.

My Doctor didn't want to prescribe anything to do with rectal meds!

So the first time I saw him I let it go, the second time I saw him, I was not about to let that happen again! Anyway, I think he caught a glimpse of my face, and quickly changed his tune....which is just as well, as he was about to see a side of me that I don't think he would have liked very much!

It makes me so angry, especially when you bear in mind, that many of us are constantly "going to the bathroom in our pants" and yet they have the audacity to suggest we would be squeamish about using enemas or suppositories.....really!!!

i just developed skin rashes after taking pentasa? is this normal? does some of you encountered this?

should i stop taking pentasa for i while so that i could check if it is really from taking the meds?

to eliminate that this is not liver rash??
