As I have posted before, having had a parent with MS and having met a few other people with IBD and a first degree relative with MS, I've always wondered about links, recent mentions of the bacteria b fragilis in conjuction with the diseases also seems relevant. This description of some new research was interesting to me, although the "leak" seems to be in small intestine rather than colon - posting in case anyone else interested.

Interesting. I wonder if this happens to us if our bodies have a choice, give us IBD or give us MS?

Pretty interesting, thanks for posting.

I wonder if it's a sort of molecular mimicry situation going on in MS. Like your body is trying to destroy an antigen on a certain bacterium and it recognizes a similar autoantigen on your myelin or something. So that initial immune attack causes the immune system to attack everything.

Thanks for posting.

My grandmother was diagnosed with MS at age 50, I was diagnosed with UC at 55. I mentioned this to my previous GI, who dismissed it as "no connection" - but she wasn't an IBD specialist. It seems logical that the various autoimmune diseases would have a lot in common.

On a side note: The biggest parallel is the triple antibiotic therapy for well over a year.... So this is very similar to the MAP treatment in clinical testing today by RedHill Pharma I think they are called - Dr. Borody.

EDIT: Actually the whole thing parallels the MAP stuff from Professor Herman-Taylor -like detection, limited labs, difficult to visualize etc etc etc..

Because of this it really makes me wonder.

I wonder if this is why LDN seems to help (some people) with MS or UC?

This connection also makes me wonder if we are a higher risk of also developing MS. I know we are more likely to get another autoimmune disorder, but I wonder if MS has a higher percentage of likelihood.

UCandMe - I don't think we are at higher risk of MS, interestingly, b. fragilis, which is found in high numbers in UC intestines is suggested to be protective against MS.
