Hi there!

My 16 yo son seems to have a bad bug, Temp 103, vomiting, D, etc. He also has UC which we just managed to get under control about a month ago. He wnet to the doctor yesterday who took some blood tests & found his CRP to be 13. This very laid back doctor sounded very, very concerned and called me early this morning to tell me his CRP is "sky high" He does not think it is just due to a possible infection (sent off stool cultures toady) or even inflammation. He sounded totally baffled. The high lab & my doctor's reaction is freaking me out.

Has anyone out there had high CRPs? BTW, my son's sed rate & CRP are always normal even during the height of a flare.

Now I am very concerned. Please say something to tell me it is OK.

13 is not a sky high CRP figure...0-10 is a normal range of CRP...minor inflammation above the normal is 10-15....a really really bad flare would give CRP of around 80....CRP is a means to indicate the amount of inflammation present in the body.....its the first blood marker that they use to detect possible IBD...sed rate is next....

It seems maybe he has an infection if your son's UC is doing OK..it's good he's sent stool samples.

Did the doc mention to do a high-sensitivity CRP test?

Is your son's sed rate fine nd just the CRP high?

Is your son not on any UC meds?

My son's sed rate is 8, wbc is 16. The dr told me that <.2 is the norm, the lab sheet indicates the same, must be different measures. He is getting worse by the day-now lots of D & bleeding.

He was on RF+ & Isatis Cooling which really helped his bleeding, he was having formed BM as well. I am so sick over this-once again, the future is uncertain.

Anxious mom,

     By 16 on the WBC..do you mean 16,000?  That is a high WBC.  That indicates infection somewhere in the system.  Is your son on antibiotics?

Hi, My son was diagnosed with UC this last May. His reactive protein was 11. His Doctor said that was high ( not sky high, but high). He is finally! in remission and test is .3 I am wondering if this "bug" is a UC flare. It sounds like it. D, bleeding, fever, the tests... That's exactly the symptoms my son had.
Has he had a colonoscopy recently?

Another thing. Why isn't he taking Prednisone? or any UC medications? This really sounds like a flare.

14 here during early UC dx, fecal calprotectin is a more accurate measure of inflammation activity also don't base the results on a "single" bloodwork test

tip: CRP and ESR can easily be deceiving while on steroids (also ESR is effected by blood hemoglobin)

My doctor told me that my CRP count when I was initially diagnosed was 94.

i also don't think that 13 is sky-high. I hate such fear-monger doctors, from my experience i can say they are always idiots. Sometimes an ordinary infection may cause even much higher CRP

I wouldn't worry. I get mine checked on a regular basis. I'm in a really bad flare, and it's normally between 3-5 right now. about 2 months ago I had a fever and a cold, my CRP went up to 17 and it went back down as soon as the cold was gone. Not sure why your doctor seems to be so worried.

Few months ago I had the worst pain in my abdomen and ended up going to the ER. I knew it was my appendix because my UC was under control. When the CRP came back at 23, the consultant was convinced I was having a flare and didn't want to accept it. It was only when one of her co workers pushed for another scan that they saw my inflamed appendix. I left the next day sans appendix and colon intact! CRP and ESR get elevated with inflammation or infection anywhere in the body and are even affected by stress, diet and medication... Seems like the doctors reaction was a bit over the top.
