qing dai

I took qing dai for about a month in May also and then stopped it although I had no ill effects. Although I started taking it again at the beginning of September after seeing blood again, but also started drinking wheat grass juice again and had terrible stomach pains and diarrhea the next day so I stopped. I attributed it to the wheat grass juice though but I stopped taking both (too much at once).

Not sure if it did anything for my uc as I was on hydrocortisone enemas also.

Came across this forum when doing some research on Qing Dai.. It's an old tread but figured I'd drop my two cents in anyway. I've had severe pan colitis since I was 14 (now 38), and in that time I've generally had 2-4 severe flares lasting 2-3mo at a time every year. Doctors have tried to put me on immuno modulators but I've refused due to their side effects. a few years ago I tried SCD and had limited success with it. Last Aug though I came across a forum that mentioned Qing Dai. After researching it on NIH and other reputable sites, I decided to try it. When I started it I was in the middle of a bad flare. My doctor prescribed me prednisone the same week I started it, other than that I was only taking lialda. Generally Prednisone takes over a month to clear me up, and even then I relapse within a couple weeks. After starting Qing Dai though I noticed a significant decrease in activity after 2 weeks. I continued to take it.. (roughly 1-2g a day.. (a pile about the size of my pinky nail on a teaspoon morning and eve). 2 mo later I had a colonoscopy... My god... I was stunned. It was the clearest colonoscopy I had seen in over 20 years. My doctor was pretty stunned to. (I had informed her of the Qing Dai, and she had agreed to monitor me on it after reading the NIH studies I had printed out for her). Now 7mo on.. I have not had a single flare. Bowel movements are formed and regular. It'll be interesting to see the pictures at the next colonoscopy. I'm still taking it every day (with the occasional skipped dose). I have not been monitoring my diet at all, and eating all the foods that used to send me into a flare. These foods have had no ill effect that I've seen (other than making me fat...lol). Just wanted to put my story with it out there for anyone interested. Also if you're curious which brand I use (because someone always asks) It's the "Treasure of the East" 100% Natural Qing Dai / Indigo Naturalis.

Knowing what I know now I'd take qing dai before anything else if I could avoid the damage corticosteroids did to me. Nobody should ever have take dangerous drugs like immune suppressants and syntheitic steroids in high doses when there are safe and highly effective alternatives. A lot of doctors are very misinformed or ignorant about herbal medicines sadly and they don't understand the damage drugs can do. Like drugs there are harmful herbs out there but that doesn't make them all bad.
Only thing is you have to be patient with herbs and not give up before they start working.

I researched here and other places and finally decided to try Qing Dai. I am tapering off of steroids and am down to 6mg. I take Entyvio every 4 weeks due to developing antibodies. I started bleeding again and having quite a bit of pain after starting tapering from 15mg. I bought mine from Atlanta Acupuncture. I had read that the recommended dose is around 2 to 3 grams. The first thing I noticed is that the bottle is a little short. It is supposed to be 100 grams, but seems to be more like 80. I filled 5 capsules with two scoops (1/4 tsp) intending initially to take 5 over the day as that would be approximately 2.8 grams. After taking the first two doses, I felt that this is a strong herb, and I am cutting back to 2 to 3 capsules out of the original 5. I read in one study that possible side effects are headaches, nausea, subcutaneous issues, and liver issues. I think I may have had a light headache from it (as apposed to from steroid withdrawal) and I noticed blood spots on my arm today. On the other hand, after taking it just two times, I had no bleeding for a day and a half. (I didn't take any for a few days after the first two times) I resumed taking it yesterday, and again, my bleeding has stopped. I am also going less, with more form to it. Will report back. I have my next Entyvio infusion on Wednesday coming up.
