Humira vs. LDN

Don't forget the possibility that LDN might not work at all. It's not so cut and dry that LDN works but you have to wait 6 months. That's a lot of assuming. Also, the LDN camp claims that for LDN to be effective you should be on the SCD diet, which may actually be the reason itself if it takes 6 months to show results and the LDN really doesn't even do anything. Actually, I've never heard of the 6 months thing. Are you prepared to go on the SCD diet? What about oral and rectal mesalamines?

Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated. It's a bit overwhelming reading all the posts with different combinations of drugs, supplements, etc... If I am approve for assitance with Humira, I will probably start it again. In the meantime, I will continue the LDN. My chiropractor said to eat fresh figs, and sauerkraut. (not together!) He suggested Prebiotic/Inluin and Prosynbiotics. (Standard Process)

In WA state there are thousands of us who were informed that they no longer had healthcare ins, even though the premiums were paid. This Just came out of no where. It is impossible to get an answer, we're just told they are investigating the matter. It's a huge glitch, but in the mean time, people are paying out of their pockets for medication, or have given up. This has been going on since April.

For me LDN was fully effective within 48 hours. Do not assume it will take so long.

Try it. I don't think it will harm you. I was on it for 2.5 years and it was wonderful. Controlled my symptoms so well my kids got a normal childhood including visits to the zoo and arboretum, etc. I couldn't do that before.

Too bad I had uveitis. LDN doesn't control that.

Sometimes a UC flare can be accompanied with extra symptoms such as arthritis and eye inflammation such as uveitis. But uveitis also occurs in many people who have no IBD whatsoever. Are you sure that your eye inflammation is caused by your ulcerative colitis? If not then you probably cannot expect LDN to help with your eyes.

IMO I would try LDN before getting on a biologic like Humira. Biologics have side effects and I personally would prefer to snuff out flares with as little collateral damage as possible. But if you can control your UC with LDN then some advantages are that it is cheap and has few side effects that we know of so far. Of course if LDN doesn't work for you then you have little choice about going on Humira.

You have to do what you're comfortable with.

My only advice is generic: get enough rest, eat as much nutritious food as possible, and don't let yourself get too sick. If you start flaring don't let it get completely out of control before you seek medical attention. Flares don't usually go away on their own.

Been there with insurance and it is no fun. In my early twenties I flared badly. I didn't want to go back on prednisone. I was a full time student, working part time, and insurance was an issue (I had none!). I was also poor. I tried a lot of homeopathic remedies and dietary modifications. My sweet (wonderful) parents saved me- I am lucky. They took me to the GI. The GI helped get most of the meds and appointments written off somehow- free samples, something about charity care, and a tax write off for the drug companies. My parents (luckily and kindly) covered the rest.

Don't hesitate to share with your doctor that insurance, medication costs, or whatever else is an issue- the good ones care and will help in any way they can.
