UC more common in women?

I am a male who was recently diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. I've noticed that it is women who seem to have this disease more than men. How many other guys are here?

Just me and you man. Does it really matter though? We both have it and that is what is really important, as for the others, there will be both males and females. For those of us who do suffer from this, well it really does blow azz, regardless of gender.

I think we with women, our hormones sometimes have a big role to play in flare ups. I know mine do. When us women have our monthly periods, we tend to get a worsening in symptoms. Also many women are diagnosed with UC after having a baby as our hormones suddenly drop very suddenly which causes the abnormal inflammatory response.

Hi, Statistically I have no idea if more woman have the illness than men, but anyways there are plenty of men on this site, so no worries on that score!.....

With most autoimmune diseases women seem to be more susceptible than do men, however, with UC it is about a 50/50 rate overall. There may be more women than men on this website though.

Some are dominant to women, some men, and some (IBD) is an even split. I believe this sorta holds true elsewhere in the world as well, but I'm not sure. Others would know better. It's interesting though.

They have the same study but specific to just IBD as well - Just google Incidence of IBD in Sardinia, Italy I think it is.

I feel like there are a lot of men here, but I think in some cases, women are more apt to go to the doctor and maybe more likely to talk about these things?

I'm a guy as well, and I have UC. I've heard Crohn's afflicts women slightly more and UC afflicts men slightly more. Autoimmune diseases in general seem to be present in women much more than men, but different diseases seem to have different breakdowns of ratios. I believe IBD has very socially progressive views and thinks both men and women should have an equal chance to get it, haha.

IBD doesn't discriminate no matter what age, sex or color you are.
