First time with C.Diff

Hi everyone, I was having a lot of pain and frequency and blood and some fevers the last few weeks and it turns out I have C. Diff. What are everyones experiences who has had this before? I have heard it is hard to get rid of and it comes back easily.

Welcome to the Club...ugh. I've had it at least 3 times in the last 8 years. What med are you using to treat it? I always use Vanco; it works the best but it is $$$$. I just finished up my last round of it on Tuesday.

I just got vancomycin. Do you usually use probiotics too?

c diff is a total life ruiner. i am sorry you have it. i had to do one round of flagyl and two rounds of vancomycin to kill it off. the final round was 1.5 months long and i've tested negative for 14 months now. i had been taking probiotics prior to the c diff and also after (drank kefir and ate yogurt as well). none of that helped to be honest. it was really just the long course of vanco that killed it in the end. if you wanna take probiotics, try it, but i found it to be a waste of money for me. i was loading up on culturelle, benebiotics, and whatever else i could get my hands out. still kept coming back!

I'm sorry to hear that you've gotten C.Diff. I had it back in early June, and it was nothing short of a miserable experience. (I waited way too long to discuss with my doc--I just assumed my flare was getting worse.)

I did one round of Flagyl, which didn't do the trick. Was quickly switched to Vanco, which did. However, it did come back a couple of times, which I got under control by starting on the Vanco again right away. One thing that FINALLY did the trick to keep it away was to slowly taper off of the Vanco. (I think it's about a 6 week taper.) I'm finally going to be finished with it this Friday and have had no problems with C.Diff for a good month or so. If your doc does not have you taper off of it, be sure to ask about that.

For many, C.diff get controlled by Vancomycin. If not- check into Fecal transplant. It's the FDA approved treatment as a last resort for recurring C.diff.There are lots of info regarding FT in you tube,internet and this forum.If interested please check it out....
Home FT helped DD's C.diff along with a hefty bonus of UC remission to this day.

I agree that one of the most successful and permanent treatment for C Diff is fecal transplants. Perhaps your doctor will recommend it if the infection returns after treatment.

One of the reasons why C Diff tends to come back after treatment is because while antibiotic treatment can cure the infection, antibiotics are what can cause C Diff in the first place. Antibiotics are weapons of mass destruction that kill both the bad C Diff bacteria as well as the good bacteria that protect you from C Diff.

I recommend taking probiotics with beneficial bacteria while taking your course of antibiotics. The one probiotic that is particularly effective against C Diff is Saccharomyces boulardii. It is actually a probiotic and beneficial yeast rather than a bacteria and therefore cannot be killed by antibiotics. It helps to ensure that your gut will retain good guys that help keep the bad guys in check.

Hi all, I had it too. I've had it for about 3 months and am in remission for 3 weeks now. Another thing to mention is also taper off of the probiotics or I should say keep the probiotics going while introducing small portions and gradually increase each day to a normal diet. Eat in smaller portions each meal and spread them out during the day and monitor it. Stay away from coffee/caffeine, soda drinks, milk, alcohol and chocolate. Seems like the sensible thing to do. I know I could relapse but I am even constipated now but with healthy stools. This is what I literally call "Talking some crap." LOL. Here is my link. This describes exactly what I went through, what I ate and my method of beating this disease. This may help you or give you something to use for your method and keep the $$$$ very low because there are expensive meds out there that you might get away without them like I did (so far). I had a fight with C Diff from through part of 2013 and 2014.

Two rounds of Flagyl did nothing. Don't bother with it. I should have listened to that advice myself.

Probiotics were recommended and I took them but they did nothing for me (Align and another brand that I can't remember the name of).

Next up was Vancomycin which knocked it down enough where I tested negative and symptoms were greatly reduced. However the C Diff came back after 60-90 days or so.

Next up was Difficid. That stuff was expensive but it took care of the problem.

I would honestly go for FMT if you have any health donor.

Just got this in the email today. Seems like fecal transplant is the answer to Cdiff.

If the Difficid had not cleared up c-diff the next step would have been FMT. Or if it comes back FMT will probably be what we do next vs. Difficid again.

My concern with FMT is the increasing research showing gut biology's (flora & fauna) impact on overall health and metabolism. In my case I would want to know about the donor. Height, weight, health, age, do they run, participate in triathlons, etc. Not saying that it would be easy or even possible but not knowing would be a sticking point and cause me to hesitate.
