Hello, I am diagnosed with *some* form of colitis on account of my 1st flare a few months ago. Did a Sigmodiscopy and GI says it's "mostly Ulcerative" but "could be Crohn's". He said he wants my "gut to calm down" before doing a full colonoscopy. (Had a full colonoscopy 3 years ago which showed clean) - I am now 39 years old.

Taking 3 Liada pills daily, PLUS mesalamine enema most nights. (I've not seen blood for 2 months, and I have 2 semi-soft BM's daily)

I think I have bronchitis - I've had this before and it took antibiotics to get rid of it. I've only had this for 3 days - but it feels EXACTLY like my previous bout.

Are there any antibiotics I can take for bronchitis - that is SAFE in that it won't trigger a flare?

Any antibiotic could possibly trigger a flare.

Thanks - so when UC'ers and Crohn'ers have an infection - do most just bite the bullet, take the antibiotic and enjoy the flare? Or do they wait it out and hope for the best?

Yes, antibiotic may trigger flare - but is it worse to 'hope' a virus goes away?

Also, does taking probiotic at the same time help, if so - which probiotic? Thanks

I would be extra cautious that an antibiotic is really what you need. If so, taking probiotics is helpful.

Are you already taking a probiotic? If so which one? You may be able to just continue with it and even possibly up the dose. Make sure to take it a few hours apart from the antibiotic.

No, not taking any probiotic.

IF this bronchitis does prove to be an infection and I need antibiotics....

Are there some names of ProBiotics anyone is familiar with to take, with the purpose of *hopefully* protected against antibiotics?

This whole thing is weird. lol. Apparently I've had "colitis" for awhile - but only now at age 39 did it get diagnosed. Have had antibiotics as recent as 2 years ago and had no flare.

I think with UC, it is very important to make sure that you know an infection is bacterial and not viral. So many doctors will prescribe antibiotics for infections that are viral and not bacterial. That way you know you don't have to take antibiotics and there is less of a risk of a flare up.

That being said, I'm taking a 5 day course of azithromycin for an upper respiratory infection and oddly enough, my UC is quieter than usual so far. So you never know what could happen, but generaly antibiotics are risky for us.

Unfortunately there is no rulebook that works on everyone. Sometimes you have to suffer through the infection. Sometimes you have to take the antis. If you are already taking probiotics you should increase the dosage considerably. If not then you should probably take a mega dose of them while on the antis but some probiotics can make you better and some can make you worse and everyone is different. Vsl#3 is the best known and has the most success but in can make some worse. I believe prescript assist was specially made for use with antis.

Everyone is different but if it helps, Z pack (azythromycin) doesn't bother my UC. I took clindamycin for a tooth infection/extraction and that made me flare.

Probiotics and an increase in my curcumin got me back to normal.

Sometimes you have to take antibiotics even if it may be bad for the UC.

Z-pack worked well for me with my last upper respiratory infection. On the other hand dentist gave me penicillin for the last tooth pulled, it caused abdominal pain and increase in symptoms.
