Lialda (mesalamine) and loss of menstrual periods

Just wondering if any women taking mesalamine experienced secondary amenorrhea (lack of periods).

I have been taking Lialda since last summer, and my periods stopped in November of 2012. My GYN has done a complete work up, and the only abnormal finding was a thickened endometrium from lack of having a period. She prescribed a 12-day progesterone challenge in March of this year, following which I did have a period for roughly 4 days. Since that time, I have not had another period.

She has since recommended I take the progesterone 12 days each month to induce a period, since not having a period puts me at risk for endometrial cancer. I am reluctant to take the hormones on a regular basis since my 34-year-old sister was recently diagnosed with estrogen & progesterone positive breast cancer, and her physicians recommended she tell her female family members to avoid any type of hormone replacement therapy given her particular diagnosis. I also have lost my mother and grandfather to colon cancer.

So....I'm wondering if there are other women out there experiencing lack of periods from mesalamine and what they have chosen to do....hormone replacement therapy or just enjoy not having periods any longer?

Wow, I just posted the same question without seeing this first- SORRY! But yes- this is me, me, me!! Ever since I was diagnosed and began mesalamine, the periods are GONE. I tried as hard as I could to last 2.5 months without any drugs (to see if I woudl get my period), but my UC came raging back, and I never saw my own P. Ughhh. I have been given BC a couple times, and it comes right back. But that's not a real period, as you're not ovulating.

I recommend hormone replacement therapy merely because the low estrogen leads to osteoporosis... a problem you really don't want to have downt he line. My gyno freaked out that I had been missing my periods for so long without intervention.

It's not a problem for me now... but what about in 10 years when I want to have kids?

Not sure if u ladies will get this but I have the opposite problem. I am 32 , still nursing 13 months. I started lialda on Sunday & got my period yesterday. Have you ever heard of this. I am new to this crohns world i never heard of it until I was diagnosed. Also on some of your posts u wrote no symptoms for years is that because you were taking medications daily? Or is that no medicines & you had no flare ups. I got diagnosed jan 2011
