Hi im new to this and need some help. I had my first really bad flare up earlier this year and was in the er a few days out of not knowing whats happening. Ok to where im at now. I got diagnosed with UC and the later Chrons and have been on prednisone for months and still on it for another month. The doc gave me 800mg Asacol HD 3x a day. I have yet to start it due to the side effects and everything else ive read and also the fact i already have a Kidney Disease (Medullary Sponge Kidney) and i frequently get stones. I need to figure this out fast ive been getting really bad pain the past few days, i don't think prednisone is helping anymore.....Maybe an alternative to Asacol or idk any help would be nice :)

the steroid is only a short term fix. I would try the Asacol (or other 5-asa) and just have some blood work to monitor kidney. it is the best tolerated UC drug.

if you want to skip 5-asa, you can try an immuno suppressant like 6mp - but that can give stones if not taken with lots of water.

I was also diagnosed with Chron's after going through some severe symptoms. My 10 months medication didn't work so well, so I had my ostomy surgery. I fell better now despite my condition. My stoma bag really saved me.

What side effects have you read about? I ask because asacol has a very good safety profile and many use it longterm without a single side effect. It is a topical anti-inflammatory medication, and only about 10 percent hits your kidneys. I cannot advise regarding your kidney condition and asacol. Ask your doctor about it.

Your choices are any of the first level of uc drugs which are topical meslamine-based anti-inflammatory medications (e.g., asacol, apriso, lialda). Second level of uc drugs are immunosuppressive meds (e.g., imuran, 6mp, aza) which slowly buildup in body. Third level is biologics (e.g., remicade, simponi, humira) which are either self-injections or given via IV.

Thank you guys for replying i was mainly worried about the kidney interactions it could have im going to start it tin the morning and see how it goes for a few weeks to see if it helps. Ill just be sure to be extra hydrated. I dont really want to take more intensive drugs or anything.
Is asacol the easiest one or is there anything i can take less of or?? and pain can they do something about that? :(

Asacol can often have zero side effects while prednisone has guaranteed side effects. Hopefully the pain will go away when your condition gets better.
