Sulfasalazine and azathioprine together. conflicting advice.

Apologies for any poor spelling grammar as typing out on my phone.

My gastro doctor put me on Aza and Sulfasalazine together as I was having joint pain and the Sulfasalazine really helped ll me with it when I had joint pain in the past. He claimed that there are no major interactions between the two drugs but I would need regular blood work which I have been doing. I also see a rheumatologist who was shocked that I was on both these drugs. She says I should quit the Aza and up my sulfa to 3g per day (currently on 1g per day and 200mg of aza).

Seeing my gastro doc tonight so any advice is appreciated.

Still have mucus and wind but feel I'm a little bit better from the aza... I pass mucus still many times per day.

I was given some prednisolone enemas. But worried about taking them as I have slightly low t scores from a recent bone density scan as I've been on pred tablets for about 7 months now... slowly getting off them. Shall I take the enemas?

There should be no problem with azathioprine and sulfasalazine. I dont believe there azathioprine interacts with the sulfa portion, and it def doesnt interfere with the mesalamine portion.

Predisolone enemas should be fine and should not affect you systemically enough for you to worry about bone density etc.

And yes you can reverse bone density with vit D and calcium. You should be on both if you are taking any corticosteroids

Ya if its helping I would recommend staying on the imuran. I made the mistake of coming off of it once, and once Im done with this clinical trial im on, Im going to get right back on it. And thats good, but talk to your doctor today to see if those supplements are sufficient : )
