afirst flair on meds...Very different..???

Hospitalized with severe UC 4 years ago, went on Asacol after 4 months of Pred, and was doing fine, up until last week...First, some constipation for a feew days, then, a good bit of mucus, then, after 4 days the mucus has gone away, but Im dripping some blood at the end of the morning BM, a flair, oh joy smh...I am so aggravated I cant see straight, thought I had a working protocol going on that would last for life...lol..., and have done great for more then 3 years now...Haven't seen 4 years remission in 20...Thing is, this time, the flair is acting differently, I guess because its the first flair on meds...Dosn't seem as violent, and Im hoping it dosent last for to long...Maybe the Asacol will help it pass with less insanity this time. I have never had a flair wile on meds, so its a first..The first morning I saw some mucus, I just felt like I was hit by a bus...lol...It was like, "Oh, hell no, here we go again"... ???:

Maybe try adding rectal mesalamine enemas to help get control of possible flare.

Hi Jazzly, I agree, you need some rectal Meds ASAP, speak with your GI, Are you taking any probotics?, I am sure you know they are helpful. I wouldn't panic at this stage, if you act quickly you might be able to get this flare under control, but you need help with this asap, even if you have to wait to see your GI you can at least ask for some rectal Meds to be using immediately.

The first ever flare when you get diagnosed is usually the worst and most violent for most people. Thereafter, usually because you're on meds, the flares are horrid but not as bad. My flares used to be a lot worse where the toilet bowl would be full of blood but now 14 years on, the nature of my flares are different. Now not as bloody but more painful abdominally. It's a bit weird really.

What is and was your Asacol dosage? Are you on any probiotics?

Yep the first sign of mucous I up my rectal meds. I would add them to your regimen.

I usually try increasing meds at first sign of flare up too. If you're not on the max dose of Asacol, you could probably increase. Do you have a gi? Do you have rectals meds? The fact that things are mild is good, at the same time, flares usually start mild so definitely dont let it get worse.

Thanks for all the input..I am on VSL 3 double strength, and a strict diet.. I am picking up some rectal mesalamine enemas on Monday, the ins company is not happy about paying 400.00 for 7 enemas, but I think they are going to pay for it.. 4 boxes of 7- 4 weeks, Im on 800 mgs of asacol 3 times a day, might just up the dose, the rectal meds are crazy money here in California, but if the rectal meds would be a better way, then that will be the course of action, just not sure which one would be the better choice with no experience in this area of meds and flairs. I dealt with my UC with a holistic MD for 12 years up until it dident work any longer...After 20 years with UC this is the first 4 years of remission I have had in that 20, so needless to say, it did take me by surprise to have a flair come on so fast...November and October were usually the time of year I flared most of the time in the past, so Im always looking over my shoulder right about now anyway...Oh well, back to it, but this time I have meds to deal with this tiger...Again thanks for the input...Given the choice, would you go with upping the dose of asacol or rectal meds...?

Weird that generic mesalamine is so expensive. I am in ca and I get it for ten dollars with my insurance. Are you insured? 4800mg is the max oral dose, I think you should try the rectal meds regardless of whether you increase the oral dose.

My insurance will cover it, its the name brand, but man, the cost is so excessive...Ill be picking them up from Vons tomorrow...No blood or mucus today, 2 bm's...This is the strangest flair Iv ever had...Im wondering if my diet rich in beans and lentils just overloaded my system...Iv just never had a flair go like this one before, or its just the first flair Iv had on medication...With some luck this may pass quickly...It will be a first.

If the brand name is expensive, just ask for generic. That's usually inexpensive.
