In Remission but still in pain

New to the UC world. Was diagnosed in October with Pan Colitis. Spent 2 weeks in hospital trying to get the flare under control. Dr. Said it was the worst flare he'd encountered. Talks of surgery happened but I was vehemently against it and I'm glad because I'm in remission now. Here it is Dec. I'm on Apriso, just started taking it today, in fact. I haven't had any blood in my stool for about 3-1/2 weeks but I am still in pain, so I'm taking pain pills as needed. I don't want to as it makes me foggy and unable to drive. Any suggestions or reasons as to why I'm still in pain,( lower colon mainly?) Dr. said I would be for at least another few weeks but I don't see why if I'm healed up.

Medications:
50mg. Prednizone, Iron, Omeprazoli, Apriso,

At least for me the pain is usually the last to go. How are your bm's? Solid, soft, D?

I'm not quite sure why the pain is the last to go honestly and I've often wondered that myself.

My BM's are formed but soft. Seems that in the A.M. I have D, not sure why. No blood. Just pain. and it's like the left side of my colon to the bottom.

If your having D you're not completely healed yet. Are you on any rectal meds? If not, I suggest you ask your doc for them because they will help heal you more.

Yea I'm probably jumping the gun a bit when I say I'm in remission, I literally just dropped dosage on the prednizone from 60mg to 50mg a day. It's been a long haul. I just want to feel normal again.

Honestly, if you're still on pred, you're also not in remission, even if you have no symptoms.

I also second the suggestion that you add in some rectal meds, preferably mesalamine enemas.

Thank you, I will mention it to the doc. I go back second week in January. Hopefully by then the pain will be gone and so will the flare.

Prednisone is famous for working WHILE YOU ARE ON IT. Often as you taper down and off your symptoms return unless you have a great maintenance strategy, which you won't know if you do or not until the time comes. But, you have to get off the prednisone at some point because it will cause more damage than the UC if you don't.

Who said you were in remission? Doesn't sound right that your GI would say you were if you're still bleeding occasionally and still in pain...

Your symptoms sound similar to mine. I also have been complaining about pain in my left side ( I have left sided colitis). I am also tapering off pred at the moment and am on 15mg. MY stools are soft but formed and am only having 1-2 BM a day, which is normal for me. I would not say I was in remission yet and will not know how I will be when completely off the pred.

So the only issue for me is the pain. My blood tests have showed by CRP to be 1 so there is no active inflammation in my blood but that is sometimes the case with me whereas a stool sample will show the tru state of my colon (i.e. calprotectin test). I have submitted my stool sample yesterday so will know more from the results of that. Maybe that is something you should push for?

I do not understand the pain either. I also did not know it was one of the last things to go after coming out of a flare. That's interesting. Pain has subsided slightly for me after starting to use Salofalk enemas nightly as well as my oral meds. However it is definitely still there! I also find that going on soups and soft fish diet also helps me as it gives my colon a rest. I think maybe our colons are just taking their time to heal.

I am off Predni for 15 days now. Symptoms did not come back ( yet). I am on Apriso and religiously take Turmeric, Boswellia, Probiotics and Flax seed oil. Also, eat good amount of Pomegranate and Aloe Vera gel.(SMOOTHIES)

I'm weaning off prednisone. I'm at 50mg. Taking Apriso, Iron pills and the pain comes in spurts. I read headaches are a side effect, I started feeling one yesterday and today I had hints of one as well. I hope that's all I get. I literally just started taking the Apriso so I'm sure it will take at least a week for anything to come of it. Glad you are doing well Diva2014. I hope that through this holiday season we all stay healthy and feel good, it will suck if I flare up at my in-laws. Stay strong and healthy everyone!
