Severe hair loss

My DD has been experiencing severe hair loss for many months now. Is it a side effect of mesalamine or Azathioprine? Is there a remedy to stop this?

Meslamine has thinning hair and hair loss listed under less common side effects:

I had it really bad when I started mesalamine. I thought i was going to go bald (and that would be crazy considering I have a ton of hair). After a few months it stopped falling out. Have you noticed any improvement for her over time? How long has she been on mesalamine? Have you tried supplementing with biotin?

This issue has been there for last one year but of late it is really bad. I have not supplemented her with biotin. Is there a specific brand that is recommended.

I haven't been taking anything lately since my hair has been back to growing normally. I had this issue years ago and I took biotin at that time. Not sure if it helped but my hair did stop coming out and it grew back so it wasn't hurting. You may want to search and see if people have had results with any particular brands.

I really hope your little one gets a break from all of this soon.

My hair is not good to begin with but then add in Asacol, Humira, and Prednisone and my hair was awful. I am off all of the meds as I have had 2 of 3 Jpouch surgeries. I take two gummy biotin vitamins in the morning. I don't have the bottle with me to tell you the brand but they are strawberry flavored and in a light pink bottle. I do think they help. My hair is a lot better now, but I was also severly malnourished before I had surgery.

It's sad how much ulcerative colitis takes from a person, I especially hate to hear about kids dealing with all this.

You can take any brand biotin. I have, I usually go for the one that is on sale at cvs and it is 5000 mg.
Also, I am currently using monoxidil 10% nightly and have purchased nioxin shampoo and conditioner. It seems something is working as the hair loss in the shower has subsided and I do see new growth coming in although slowly. I have always had very fine hair so I really cannot afford to lose any.

Hope this helps your daughter I know to use the monoxidil everynight might be too much for her so try the nioxin shampoo because I think it helped me and the biotin.

I had the same problem. My hair began falling over a number of months after beginning the same medications.it then stopped before occurring again a number of months after first stopping. The second bout of shedding lasted only 3-4 weeks, and I've had no trouble since then. The only thing that genuinely helped was cutting my hair short.

Has she gotten her iron checked? UCers tend to have low iron (due to the fact that we poop out blood). My hair started falling out a year ago and I wasn't sure what was causing it. I googled everything I could do to make it stop. My hemoglobin was low in a blood test so my doctor told me to take iron. I also took biotin and used nutri-ox shampoo and leave-in formula and between all of those my hair stopped falling out and it has grown back. It's not to where it was before, but I have a lot of new growth still coming in. I really think my hair loss was due to my low iron though. Get it checked!

She has low iron and is anemic. Will try to increase her iron supplement.
