Gas and Inflammation

This unending flare is driving me mad, and, to add fuel to the fire, the inflammation has almost tripled in severity and is being accompanied with gas and bloating. Can anybody handle having gas with serious inflammation? The passing of the gas is always accompanied by blood, mucus, traces of unformed stool, and it makes the urgency impossible to handle (I need the bathroom as soon as I feel the slightest hint of gas, as in, roughly five to ten seconds). I've gone to the bathroom over a dozen times today (I felt like going over three dozen times) and it's driving me insane.

Is this normal? Does anybody else experience this during a flare? It's ridiculously hard to deal with this disease at the moment.

I never farted during flares. It was a shart no matter what so i always went to the bathroom to do it. But yes, it is painful and sucks a lot.

I remember when I was at my worst just plain water would give me problems, especially in the summer when doing yard work like mowing the lawn. I would get dehydrated and drink a large amount of water followed by several trips to the bathroom shortly afterward - mostly with just gas. The only way around it I know of is to get better. Drugs such as Bentyl and gas-x type things help some people but none of them ever did much for me and with some of them being out in the heat can be deadly. Can't remember what treatments you are doing.

This sounds so familiar! Back in November I couldn't even move or sip water without passing gas with blood and mucous. Over 30 times a day, it drove me mad! Not sure how 'normal' it is for a flare, but I guess it was just a bad one. It's nowhere near as bad now, so all I can say is to hang in there. I found that antispasmodics helped a bit with urgency, but I didn't come across anything that made too much difference. Hope you feel a bit better soon!

Yes, inflammation in the rectum is the cause of it, sharts when it should be just farts. You're already on nightly salofalk enemas which treat that area. Hang in there, look for steady improvements on a week to week basis. If not, get a hold of your gastroenterologist and change your scripts around. You could ask for a steroid-based enema or suppository to help kick lingering rectum inflammation. You can take salofalk enemas at night, and steroid enemas/suppositories in the morning. The combination of those meds may give your rectal inflammation a one-two-knockout punch.

I'm with banana, it's never a fart, always a shart. Be careful.
