Remicade will stop working after a few years for some people because they form antibodies. It has to do with mouse proteins Remicade is made from. If antibodies are detected docs often add in the Imuran/6mp. But the latest clinical research finds the best outcomes when the Remicade and 6mp are started together.
Other biologics have less chance of antibodies because of human not mouse protein, but they may be 5% or more less effective.
Continuing 5-asa/mesalamine with Remicade is often done. Most people tolerate it very well, and it may allow Remicade to be every 8 weeks instead of 6 or 4. remember the infusions can be very expensive with assistance. If someone does not tolerate mesalamines, then phasing them out makes sense.
