Week 2 on Pred, felt great, now backsliding? Help!

Hi all:

So I'm on day 11 of 40 mg of Pred. On days 7,8,9 I felt 100% better...so I thought I'd give it a couple more days of 40mg since I'm not having bad side effects...then start to taper. Well, I have not tapered bc yesterday and this morning I've had mucous with gas...before having a normal bm. On the 100% days there was none of that. ..just solid bm.

Planning to call my GI today but thought I'd get input here too.

Is the pred actually going to stop working like this...so suddenly?

And geez...what the heck do I do now if Pred is only going to keep me at 100% for 3 days. ..these mesalamine drugs don't stand a chance!

Or am I overreacting? I was just really wanting this to work!

I would not worry about one bad BM. Could just be a fluke. If it becomes a trend, then I would change your tapering plans.

Pred's effectiveness decreases with frequency of use.As you taper, don't be surprised if symptoms return. Now would be a good time to get a plan...adding 6mp? It takes awhile, so you can build it up in your system while decreasing the Pred. On the other hand, my experience has been that the next bad thing always happened....you might just be having a gassy day:;

I agree with the others. One bad bm isn't enough to get thinking the worst. I also notice that when you taper, there can be days where you feel like you're definitely going downhill but it's not always the case. Things can level out. Definitely call your gi and ask how to proceed. You need to get on a maintenance plan that will keep you stable so you can safely get off pred without symptoms. What is the plan? Mesalamine? I think that's a long shot for most.

I'm generally not quick to freak out, I was just surprised at the backsliding when I hadn't begun the taper.

Yes...lialda + mesalamine enemas are what I'm trying to get back to. Since I responded so well to them to start and my flares are not insanely severe (yet anyway) we decided to try this before moving up the med ladder.

So now I'll see this through and move on if it doesn't stick.

Other thoughts?

Was your diet any different recently? I too wouldn't worry about one day.

Not really different but I did eat out for lunch.

I'm going to stay the course...today is going well.

Maybe I freaked out.
