Worst patient experience EVER! What do I do?!

So I have Kaiser Insurance but I have been going to UVA to see the GI Dr.'s there for years now and I fully trust them. I am currently in a flare which I have discussed in a couple of threads here over the past few weeks and I was in the ER 2 weeks ago severely dehydrated and very weak. I followed up my ER visit with my Dr. at UVA and we established a plan for me. I was very comfortable moving forward with this plan. However, since I have Kaiser insurance I could not get my prescriptions through the UVA pharmacy and needed to use Kaiser in order to get my meds.
I made an apt with a GI for Kaiser and went in to see him today. He was extremely rude, demeaning, cussed (not just passive words either - "f" word and "s" words all over the place!) and he completely dismissed anything and everything that UVA has done for me. Wanted a colonoscopy because he "wanted to see for himself" and made me do all of the blood work and ordered stool samples for tests that I took just last week that all came back normal! I have never in my life been that ready to just jump out of the chair and leave a Dr.'s office. He told me I needed to head over to CCFA.org and do "homework" and "educate" myself on my disease. I've had UC since 2009....and I have done plenty of research and more importantly I know my body better than any Dr.....
I know that at this point I need to work on getting rid of Kaiser and get onto a better company that will allow me to stay with my Dr. at UVA. But have any of you guys experienced this kind of behavior from a Dr.? If so, did you report them?! Were there any repercussions?

I was a patient on financial assistance at UVA prior to receiving insurance through the govt. So my meds were incredibly cheap there - but without insurance or financial assistance they cost a ton of money. So in order to have gotten my meds to not break the bank I need to use Kaiser to get them. This Dr. did not want to stay on the same plan as my Dr from UVA....didn't even want to fathom it.

Unfortunately the Kaiser HMO will not fill prescriptions not written by HMO docs.

There is likely Kaiser a process to complain about an HMO doctor. But you best have things documented. Reports of what you said and what he said are hearsay evidence. While you might expect to be assigned another GI, they will not likely rebuke him on hearsay. You might arrive at the new GI, an office-mate of the current GI, with a strike against you. Unless the GI already has a reputation. Tricky.

As for the treatment, it is hard to comment unless you say more about what the UVA doc wants to do and what the Kaiser doc wants to do.

Had a similar experience and just got my primary (who is really cool) to prescribe the meds. I have cen cal.

Gary - you have it exactly right. They will not cover anything outside of their "network". Being at one of their facilities makes you feel like a cow in a herd....terrible experience. I am in the process of changing insurance right now and getting out of the poop hole of Kaiser - hoping to get through on something tomorrow so that I can just fill the RX's that my Dr. at UVA gave me.

Her plan was to put me on Delzicol (I always did great on Asacol) and take me off of Pentasa, she started me on Rowasa enemas and a 40mg taper of prednisone.

This guy wanted to put me on Colazal (which I tried to tell him I have tried before with no success but he wouldn't listen) and take me off of Pentasa and he also started me on Rowasa enemas and wanted me to stay on the 40mg of prednisone a few more days. PLUS he ordered all of the blood work and stool samples and a colonoscopy. Oh! And a TB test in case he needs to put me on Remicade.

Out of curiosity - how often to most of you get a colonoscopy? I have had 2 since my diagnosis and my Dr. at UVA has always said that we don't want to do them too often.

Op has a right to report treatment and demeanor of dr though. It is first hand experience. If the dr that rude (cusssing) and enough people report it, it might help them grow. Or get fired so they can become the truckdriver theywere meant to be

Some doctors are jerks, getting a medical degree does not mean they are good at their job. He may have graduated at the bottom of his class. Some don't deal with people very well but if they are excellent at diagnosing/treating you have to bear with it.

That said: you need to get a better doctor because what you are currently getting is not worth how you are being treated.

Every "new" GI I went to always wanted to do a fresh c-scope even when I came in bearing official copies of recent scope. It's up to you whether to do the scope, I said no for 3 years because nothing had changed in my symptoms. Guess what, the GI did not fire me. If you came in because of change in symptoms then consider a new scope.

Using foul language is not acceptable in any circumstance. It is harassment and bullying, used to shut you up. You need a new doctor, you deserve respect and a "medical partner" who listens to you.

Ordering tests that you did last week? If you provided hard copy of those results that is malpractice. If you did not bring hard copy then he has a right to order new tests, he cannot accept your word that nothing was wrong.

I've had several bad doctors, fired a primary doc almost 2 years ago. Very good at diagnosis but not a good listener, had a God complex and a very badly run office including not reporting my positive test results of skin cancer to me for over 10 weeks even though I called 2 times.

Get another doctor then go to ratemds.com and tell your story about your current GI. You cannot be the only person he treats this way.

I think he has some version of the God complex because with Kaiser you are pretty much stuck and can't go to another doctor because with Kaiser insurance you have to go to Kaiser. Since he knows this he feels he can treat you anyway he wants, particularly if you had the gall to go to another doctor outside of the Kaiser insurance. I would also report him, particularly if you leave Kaiser. Even in a monopoly setting he has to have bosses that wouldn't approve of the language.

Glad to hear it!...I could hardly believe what I was reading...what a horrible horrible individual. I hope you let the right people know about him and his conduct.

When you register your complaint about this doctor, be sure to tell them that your experience led to your leaving Kaiser. A big corporation may or may not care a bit about you, but they care a lot about loss of customers and revenue.

Was this doc in charlottsville too? I'm from that area, and sounds like a doc I went to
