nono So I was on Prednisone 40mg for awhile and it wasn't taking down my pancolitis symptoms so they're doubling my dosage to 80mg for 4 weeks and i was wondering how much weight will i gain and i was losing weight on the 40 mg so merggrgre.

I think you should be more worried about what that amount of Prednisone will do to your growth, if you are only 14.

I don't know how long is "awhile", but if it's anything longer than a couple of weeks, I'd recommend dumping your current medical team and finding a new one. They literally sound like they don't know what they are doing. They seem like they are uselessly pumping you full of steroids and hoping for the best, not knowing or caring that steroids suppress growth!

Sorry if I sound angry; I suppose I am a little bit. I just think you ought to be tapering off the steroids, not upping them: 40mg is already a high dose, and there is no evidence that anything higher than that helps with IBD flare-ups. I'm serious about finding a new medical team, if all this one can do is bung steroids at you.

Do they have a plan for once you're off pred? Cuz just upping the dose isn't going to help you long-term. You can't stay on pred forever.

And as to your question. It's not the prednisone that makes you gain weight. It's the increase in appetite caused by pred that makes you gain weight. So that's completely up to you how much weight you gain. I have never gained weight on pred. I've been hungrier, but you just have to find different things to eat that keep you fuller longer.

@Apples, agree with other posts - you should NOT be upping the prednisone dose. Find another GI doctor this week and switch. That's what I had to do when my care team at Stanford turned out to be not competent. My son was 15 when we had to give him prednisone, our main reservation was impact on his growth - height mainly. Use of prednisone for longer than 3 months will stunt growth in young boys - it is a known fact. I would switch to other medicine options - there are quite a few to bring your disease under control. So please start with a new medical team. Good luck!

The best thing to do is have heathy foods available to eat when the insatiable prednisone appetite hits. It's more a matter of what you eat as a preventive measure. The prednisone appetite is unstoppable.
