Doc is refusing the give me a colonoscopy!

I have been complaining recently about colon cramps after having a BM. The cramps then last for a few hours afterwards until they slowly subside. This is uncomfortable for me as it is something I am dealing with everyday. After two lots of blood and stool tests, my Gi doc confirms that I have no present inflammation and that my colitis is in remission.

He says my cramps are as a result of colon spasms, a symptoms of IBS. Its because of my intestine contracting and essentially aching after the 'workout' of having a bowel movement. He seems to think that my colon has become very sensitive after my last flare that lasted quite a while (longer than any of my others) and that the previously inflamed area on my left side gets irritated when having a BM and that it needs to heal. This does make sense as I only get the cramps on my left side.

He is refusing me a colonoscopy as he is saying that I don't need one!

Honestly, I think this is reasonable. C-scopes don't come without risks, and if you're still on the edge of a flare, it could cause make things worse.

Did you ask him about an anti-spasmodic, like Bentyl? That might help.

I think bentyl is a good idea but I also think saying "you have no inflammation" because of lab test is sort of ridiculous. I have had all sorts of tests show great results and still had inflammation in a fle sig or scope.

That's what I think that maybe I do still have some inflammation but I suppose I shall never know now! Well not until I get symptoms suggesting that I do and lab tests confirm it.

Notsosickly- in the past calprotectin has been very accurate for me. Always shows inflammation even at times when I think I'm ok but I'm really not. So the fact it's come back clear twice does fill me with some confidence that I'm ok at the moment.

How is IBS diagnosed? Are there any diagnostic tests such as CT scan or x ray?

He has recommended Buscopan to me but does that mean I have to take it forever?! I'm already on a cocktail of drugs as maintenance meds for UC so don't want to be adding to the list!

Peppermint tea is good for calming down stomach. It even comes in a capsule that's is stronger and used for IBS. A heating pad may also bring some relief.

How long had it been since your last colonoscopy?

IBS is a scapegoat diagnosis. There is no test for it and no way to diagnose it. If you're having problems and they have no idea why then they say you have IBS.

if you need something, it have to be for the anxiety or may be something like Dogmatil/Sulpiride to relax the colon that's in case anti-spasmodics are not working.

Have you tried not using 'Higher Nature Aloe Vera Juice' btw? I used Aloe Vera tablets for like 2 or 3 days and I found it made me go toilet a lot more?

Also I think I remember you asking me on one of my posts about Allopurinol. I found out today that it kinda super charges the effect of Azathioprine, it doesn't have anything to do with metabolism (which I remember you thinking was the reason for taking it).

I had tests done last year for my first sudden flare of IBD. (didn't know what was wrong) All my tests came back negative. CT scan/xrays/blood/fecal. Finally after dealing with it for 10 months and still having blood in my stool they did a colonoscopy and it showed mild to moderate UC. He was surprised as all my test were clear and no inflammation markers were present or showed in prior test. Biopsies confirmed the results. Keep pressing for the test if your symptoms don't improve or change docs.

I agree colonoscopy now sounds too soon; could make things worse. The anti-spasm drugs may be beneficial to you. I would try it.
I also commented on another thread about your not using that aloe Vera as I read it uses the whole leaf. I've read the outer part of the leaf actually cause diarrhea. I once tried Nature's Own (it says it only uses the inner leaf and is supposed to have less impurities than others); I never noticed improvement or slowing or helping prevent a flare.
