first time using salofalk enemas 2g , only 16 and very nervous please help

Tips for using meslamine enemas:

• When you first start using enemas, use them in the bathroom very close to a toilet as they can come up very quick and unexpected. As you get better at them, and more confident, you can administer them in bed.
  
• Add extra Vaseline (petroleum jelly) to the tip of the enema.
  
• Warm the enema up to body temperature before administering. Put it in a pocket for a while before using, or warm it up under an armpit.
  
• Squeeze all of the air out of the bottle before administering. You do not want to inject any air into your bowel as it will both be uncomfortable and make it likely you will need to urgently evacuate the enema fluid.
  
• Lay an old towel down as any drips of the enema fluid can stain clothing, carpet, etc.
  
• Use one of the positions described in the instructions.
  
• Administer the enema slowly, too quickly and you will be less successful. If you wish, you can do one half the bottle first, wait a few minutes, and then administer the rest.
  
• Stay reclined on your left side for about 20 minutes to allow the enema fluid to be absorbed. Retire for the night.
  
• It takes practice to hold the enema in for 7 hours. Do not get discouraged, and keep trying. Even if you evacuate part of the enema, some will likely remain and heal you. As you heal, it will be easier to retain them for longer lengths of time.

It's best to lie on your left side for a while after administering the enema, like the previous poster said.

If you use an enema each night you should start to feel better within a few days. It may take several weeks to really get completely better.

You will probably not be able to stop using enemas completely, but once you have stopped having any symptoms (no blood, no mucous, no urgency) you should be able to spread out your use - like every other night for a while, then every 2nd night, etc.

Enemas never, ever hurt me - I sometimes felt a little bit crampy, but that was it. If everything feels ok (as in that you don't think the enema is going to come flying out), it's quite OK to get up and go lie in bed instead of staying on the bathroom floor for 20 minutes. I always did.

Also, you can just only use half the first few times you use it, because it's easier to retain.

The biggest thing you must do is RELAX. You won't be able to use it if you're all tense.

I pretty much always did - I kept an old towel in the bathroom closet, because sometimes, a little bit of the enema liquid would leak out when I'd squeeze the air out. The liquid stains whatever it contacts, so I didn't want to do it on a carpeted floor, or in bed. Also, if it happens to make you need to have a bowel movement urgently, you're right there by the toilet (this never happened to me, though).

The only time I didn't lie on the bathroom floor was near the end of my pregnancy, and about the first two or so weeks after I had my daughter, because I had a c-section. It just wasn't easy getting up off the floor during those times. So I just sat on the very front of the toilet seat and leaned forward.

Here are a few extra tips that have helped me get used to the Enemas. I just started using the Salofalk enemas 8 months ago (every single night since). The first 2 or 3 times I tried were quite frustrating, but since then it's been a breeze.
- I've never done it in the bathroom - always in bed - more comfortable to stay in position on my left side for the ~20-30 minutes needed to keep the enema in. If I stand up before the ~20 minutes i have urgent feelings to let it go. Usually I do it just before I fall asleep, so that's never an issue anymore.
- One of the most difficult things for me is that I'm quite gassy, and if I need to pass gas shortly after putting the enema in, it is extremely uncomfortable. Although, it's easy enough to just clench, and hold it in until the crisis passes, that's really uncomfortable, so it's easier to avoid in the first place. What I do is pass as much gas as I can just before putting my enema in. Of course, try to go the toilet first, but a better way to expel any gas, as funny as it sounds, is to do this: I lie down in bed on my left side, curled up in fetal position, which almost immediately makes me pass gas. It's quite funny - my husband laughs at me, but it works (he actually has started doing it too if he's feeling gassy or bloated as well...!) I wait ~10 minutes in that position (while reading a book or phone) to pass much as possible, then put the enema in!
- To avoid staining anything when squeezing the air out of the applicator while in bed, I just aim the nozzle back into the plastic package it came in, and have never spilled any outside.
- one last tip: to squeeze the air out of the applicator: the directions say to shake it, which can put bubbles in the medicine, so i shake gently, then hold it with the nozzle up, and tap the sides and bottom to get all the bubbles to the top (kind of like what a nurse does with a syringe to get the bubbles out), then i squeeze the air out until a tiny bit of the meds come out.

It does seriously get much easier to use the enemas and be comfortable with them, so don't get discouraged if the first few tries don't go well. They are worth it!

Good advice here, especially on squeezing out the extra air, warming the bottle, and using extra petroleum jelly on the tip.

I do my enemas standing up. I do it with my knees slightly bent, left arm holding onto the sink and the right hand reaching back and down around my right side (not between the legs, but you could try that, too). I squeeze/roll up the bottle slowly until it's kind of crumpled into a ball.

Everyone is different so try different ways until it's easy. I was never successful doing it while lying down. Standing up was an idea I read here on HW and it made a huge difference.

I always knew when I did it wrong because the liquid would be everywhere but up my bum!
