I made this really yummy dinner last night. it was chicken with onions, peppers, green onion, mushrooms, and country style white gravy over noodles. It was spiced with just a little teeny bit of crushed red pepper, black pepper and salt. Anyway, about 1/2 hr after eating I was in the bathrrom having pain in my upper belly and a lot of noise ....ugh and soft stool but not D. then I look and there is pieces of something in the water, looked like tomato skin or something. I have had two subs with tomato recently,. yesterday for lunch and the day before., but the day before yesterday I was totally fine. Can food move thru you that fast? What would cause that pain? and what the heck was that stuff in the toilet??

If you have active UC, yes food can move through the system quickly.

With increased motility, food can make it through in under 12 hours. With more active diarrhea, it can do it a lot less.

It would to me, onions, green peppers and green onion? It is the same as pulling a pin on a generade and swallowing. Those are some serious danger do not eat foods for me. Good Luck you shall learn quickly at that pace.

Yes, some have reported gastrointestinal transit times of 4 hours when flaring. So, a lunch could come out pretty fast.

I could eat that, assuming there was no MSG in it - if you used store-bought gravy or used a seasoning mix, there's a good chance MSG was in it. When I (accidentally, because I try to avoid it) eat something with MSG, I'm in the bathroom shortly after with symptoms like you describe, or with actual diarrhea.

And yeah, if you have recently eaten tomato, you'll see the skin if you have loose poop.

Yep! I used to have lettuce come out all the time. Would have it for lunch and later that night there it was.

The meal does sound very delicious though, sucks your gut didn't like it.

I've eaten it in the past and it didn't bother me. It is delish. Plus....it clears my sinuses. all the pepper. lol... I have no clue what will bother me cause this is all new to me. But I don't want that upper belly pain ever again. Im seriously afraid to eat even tho Im starving.

Well pick your poison then, let be delish and yummy if that is where priorities sit- that should really change now that your diagnosed. Personally I wouldn't be afraid to eat, it is simply you shouldn't overindulge in high fiber, especially insoluble fibers. Vegetables can be very finicky items, depending on the individual and how they are prepared - there is a lot of skins and insoluble fibers that do nothing but scratch in inside of your instestines since they don't breakdown during digestion.

That's the weird thing with having IBD, you can eat something and it might feel like it's killing you, then eat it again on another occasion and have no ill effects from it, at least that's my experience and it's very frustrating to deal with (I also have alternating IBS so that could possibly be part of the problem for me) diet is very finicky with having bowel issues and can make it that much more frustrating.

You're just on canasa? It sounds as though you're under treated re meds.

Don't oisten to terms such as dangerous foodsmunless they're actual poison. It's normal for people with nongastro issues to find certain foods don't agree.

where exactly is your uc...just low in the rectum, and what are your uc symptoms?

Yes they just have me on Canasa. They cant answer my questions and I am very frustrated. I had bleeding, diarrhea, frequency, I don't know the word for it but that feeling like there something stuck my butt. Dr said that was from being inflamed. Passing a lot of mucus......and occasional constipation in which case, it really really hurt. now the last two days, no blood but having upper abdominal pain with bowel movements and irregularity......lots of belly noises still.....I just wish my drs could be more specific with me and answer my questions.

All the dr told me is one precancerous polyp removed, hemorrhoids, and colitis. not where it was located or anything.

Doc is unlikely to be more specific about foods. Is this what you want them to be more specific about?

if you need/want more details then call your gastroenterologist and ask. You often get a nurse, who will ask the doctor, and call you back. There should be no ambiguity.

Perseverance often wins the battle. In the end, you might need a better gastroenterologist. As uc is a lifelong, chronic illness. You need to be comfortable that he/she will answer all of your concerns and be responsive to your needs. A GI is a partner in all of this, so it must work out on a communications level.

I couldn't agree more. I called there earlier and was told it could take a few days for my drs nurse to call me back with an answer. ugh.....

Now Im feeling like I have the flu on top of everything and I don't know if its that Im actually sick with something one of my kids gave me ( they have been sick))) or if its effects from the canasa or what. So wanna crawl under a rock right now. Hopefully things get better as I feel better, learn more etc.....

"Colitis" is a vague term. There are several types and with different levels of severity. You need to find out where the inflammation is located. Canasa is only going to treat the lower rectum. You may need and enema to reach a little higher and/or oral meds too. If your dr isn't responsive to you, you should find a new one who will answer questions and has experience with IBD.

he said is was lower and in the rectum. But all the research Ive done says if theres diarrhea its probably higher. I don't know how true that is. I do go back and forth between C and D. I also do get that feeling like I have to go bad but then nothing happens or just mucus with or without blood. Ive only taken two canasa and already the bleeding is almost not noticeable. However, I get light cramps after I incert it and then the next day pains high in my abdomen that I wasn't having before. So I don't know if that's normal, if its a bad reaction to the med or if its just not working fully yet and in the meantime, certain symptoms are getting worse. Im so confused. BUT I AM calling them again tomorrow.

Oh and regarding foods -- it's really pretty individual. When I am flaring bad I eat very differently than I do otherwise. I avoid fiber and eat fairly soft foods when I have diarrhea, if constipated I increase fiber to get things moving. When I am normal, I just try to eat sensibly. I haven't found any specific foods that cause me problems
