Thanks Old Mike: maybe it did.
My sister has UC and she's a raise 4 kids and 2 exchange students and do laundy and cook person...wonder what did her I. Her idea of exercise is a brisk walk
As for this post I just get a laugh that they actually have to keep telling people what Dr. Greger is saying. We see all the magazines, went through school and learned about
healthier food choices and he shouldn't be paid to tell me what I already know:
Correlations between this and that
they take a group of folks who have UC and give one group a ridiculously poor diet then the other eats great (nutritional) foods and they're shocked that more of those who ate fatty steak versus not got UC fares...really? Or pulled 'western diets' and see that folks from those countries are have increases in heart disease and others diseases like IBD. That's different than what one here might take from this (you wouldn't have UC if you were a vegan or vegetarian and if you have UC you'll get better going vegan or vegetarian). Just eat healthy, using common sense and avoid unhealthy choices (i.e. lard) but if you're on vacation in New Orleans, 'no', those foods won't harm you - moderation my friends; it's okay to have grandma's lard fried chicken every once in a blue moon.
There's a lot of discussion about
diet and I do make it a point to strive for the best diet I can even though I say I eat whatever I want; I've never really eaten a bad diet consistently but will get caught at a burger king or some greasy spoon if travelling and desperate. That's not what caused my UC
I eat 2-4 slices of all meat or all veg & meat pizza (taboo) but only every 3-4 months or so; I always preferred to eat well balanced meals. nothing to do with my UC and either starting or stopping a flare
Often folks slam processed foods (I'll eat a can of mini Ravioli about
once every 3 months if desperate and too lazy to go to the store - we keep stuff like around, not sure why but it's there) no correlation to UC - studies have a group eat well balance, Mediterranean diets and the other eats all processed foods (okay; which group fairs better: the group that didn't eat mayo, bacon cheeseburgers, tater tots, fries, fatty steak, everyday)
I prefer home made chicken soup with celery, onions, carrots made with boiling a whole, organic (tastes better to me) chicken fryer or Salmon (grilled) with lemon, Basmati Rice, steamed broccoli and Greek yogurt and my mother's Asian pork stir fry w/ vegetables and rice (that kind of stuff).
Whenever I was severely flaring I had to go low residue but still skimmed the meat fat for lean meals.
I don't eat deep fried food (just hate the greasy taste and make me sick to my stomach).
Too much sugar makes me shake so I avoid candy, ice cream and that stuff.
about
once a month or less I might eat a steak (the wife and kids push it as they get a taste for red meat so I buy filets but I lost the craving for that kind of meat so push for once/3-4 months).
I rarely digest vegetable skins and have to cook down vegetables (wife prefers them raw).
Point: I believe I eat healthy but often defend a steak, pot roast, bacon cheeseburger and pizza although I don't eat those that often in reality and never did. Healthier, as this doc preaches, is best but you don't tell me, doc, because I wasn't a vegan or vegetarian that's why I got UC and don't elude that I would get better if I became one.
Bigger Point: What we learned in school about
eating well balanced meals, getting vitamins and minerals through food and trying to eat proper servings of fruits, vegetables, lean meats and fish just seems common sense but someone seems to always be on television making lot of money saying what they believe is 'new'. It's the same as we learned in school and from parents, television and magazines. I don't need celebrity doctors (like Dr. Michael Greger) telling me that eating healthier will lead to better nutrition and thus make you feel better and, hey, just might correlate to a healthier body.
Just gets in my crawl that he insinuates those with UC ate more unhealthy than others - why I otta! (smile)
