Naturopath

I have an apt with a naturopath in the next couple of weeks. Wondering if anyone else has tried this route?

I would describe my UC as mild to moderate. Diagnosed 18 years ago. UC effects my entire colon. I get flares about twice a year but this last year has been particularly bad. Still going through a flare that started in November. I truly believe this flare was food related. After a bad scope in August, I went on a 6-week diet of no gluten, no dairy and no sugar. I felt better than I ever felt before so I thought it was safe to put these things back in my diet. Huge mistake and Ive been suffering ever since.

Trying to eat clean again and just finished a round of Uceris (only went 6 weeks because of the side effects). Got a new GI (figured new eyes may help) and will also try this naturopath.

Have you taken or are you taking any meds now?

there is a good chance that if I had continued with my ND, instead of going to my GI, i may have saved myself years of grief - i'll never know -

so when you say eating clean, does that mean going back to the no gluten, dairy, and sugar plan ?

Well 4 lialda a day (4.8 grams) is the recommended dose. You should be on rectal meslamine, as well, either a suppository (such as canasa) or enema (such as rowasa). Treating from both ends is the most effective method. I'd ask your new gastroenterologist about those things.

If that doesn't work then immunosuppressive medications would follow (imuran, 6mp, or aza). Steroids are damaging to the body, so you do not want to be on them anymore, or any longer than is absolutely necessary. 2 or 3 flares a year means lots of steroids...

I saw a Naturopath and her recommendations (for me) were purified Omega 3 fish oil, Nutragenics Metagenics (L-Glutamine), no wheat or dairy. Along with my 5ASA drugs I include those she recommends, plus probiotics, vitamins. It was interesting, but like DMC said above, you can get the same info here without spending money.

ATQT, what about the yeast theory? Yes I believe some cases of UC, including my own, are triggered by yeast infection/colonisation following massive antibiotic use through the years. This is not just about fixing the yeast IMO but healing the gut with colostrum/l-glutamine and then routinely taking antifungals etc.
