Antibiotic Success?

Has anyone done REALLY well with their UC symptoms on an antibiotic? If so, which one? Doc might be putting me on Cipro.

about 4 years ago I was on cipro for 37 days, for prostatitis which turned out to be non bacterial.
Did nothing for my UC,but that's me.

I never had a formal antibiotic treatment but at one time I had Lyme's disease. I was put on Doxycyline to treat it. That was the best I ever felt the entire five years I was in a severe flare. It definitely wasn't a coincidence.....it was the antibiotic.

Cipro is a pretty nasty one. It's known to cause tendon rupture. I'd check into others first. Good luck!

I am dx with crohns thoughmay be of interest as generic IBD info ( (Although for many years dx with UC... Described subsequently as Crohns that had masqueraded as UC ... Should have bloody told me and I'd have worn a mask to the ball too!)

I took metronidazole a few years ago for an unrelated problem. It was like a miracle cure. For the first time in years I had energy... Felt like I was 'normal' again. Sadly docs refused to prescribe long term due to side effects (as if we don't have these with every drug). And so I spiral down the drugs ride :-(.

I was on Flagyl/Cipro combo once and another time just Flagyl. The first time I was really bad off and went from 15+ a day to about 5. Most recently I was on just Flagyl and was doing a little better. I went from 7-10 a day to 3.

I'm about to start Flagyl again, although I don't know how long it will be.

I will say this, both times I did it, the first full day I was on it was nightmare. Huge increase in symptoms, but went away just as fast as they came.

I tried taking flagyl once and it made things much, much worse.

Before I was diagnosed (in the hospital after a long horrible flare) I was put on Flagyl and Cipro IV, since they didn't know it was UC yet. It seemed to help a lot, although once I was diagnosed I was switched to the usual UC starter kit (pred and Asacol). The antibiotics definitely helped calm things down in the beginning though.
