Hi everyone, I wanted to post a little update about what's next for me: I am starting medical school in a few months! I think I've mentioned a couple of times that after I recovered from my j-pouch I was going back to school, but I didn't want to spill the beans until I was 100% sure.

I have no idea if I will become a GI or a surgeon or anything related to IBD at all (I'm still at the beginning of a LONG road), but having UC is what made me think about what's important in life, how hard it is to thrive with a chronic illness, and how necessary it is to have doctors who understand what we're going through.

Guys -- there IS life after surgery. I don't believe in "after" UC (I don't consider myself cured), but there is DEFINITELY life with UC! I'm living my dream right now.

Hey Liz, congrats on everything thus far! Sounds like you really been through a lot with the 3 surgeries. How are you feeling now? Did you have pain with UC and did it go away? How many times do you go? Are you on any meds? Do you have pouchitis? Thanks so much! I have a tentative surgery appt April 3rd and am constantly weighing the pros and cons of surgery. My grandfather died recently from late colon cancer, so I am definitely susceptible to that.

Also, the mental aspect of those who have went through IPAA seem to be much stronger than those with UC.

Wouldn't it be cool to become a surgeon yourself and cure people of UC?

Way cool!!!!! This country needs better doctors, including gynecologists, who understand less common chronic illnesses. Wish you lots of luck in med school. Maybe you'll meet up with Malkavian, who is probably doing her PH.D. dissertation on immunology about now-- at university in TX. / Old Hat (34 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

Good for you! So many times since being sick and having surgeries, I have thought about becoming a nurse....I just don't have the nerve to turn my life upside down at this point. You are an inspiration for sure and I know you'll do great!
