I have no idea, Timmy. You might try a google search for "nopal cactus pads" or "prickly pear cactus pads" and see what you come up with.

I have been drinking this water for over a month now -- mixed results and it hasn't put me completely in remission. I am much better than I was when I started and feel like I am 98% of the way there. It seems to help some people but doesn't do anything for others.

Did you use the fresh Nopal or powered stuff btw?

Another 'cure'

I've seen so many come and go it does make me skeptical; I hope it helps. I wouldn't go throwing my doctor's meds away. I'd work with my GI over years of this helping to see if you both agree this or that should be reduced. I've reduced medications (working with different GI's) and had big problems when an eventual flare did come. It's so easy when you've ended your flare to come off meds and after months and years you get to believing you're cured; if a flare comes then often it hits harder the next time and if you're off your meds then it's so much harder to get healthier.

I've tried so many 'naturals' and eventually had big problems; please don't just put all your faith on this, "the answer", because UC is a crazy disease which comes and goes for no obvious reason and quite often it also does get linked with things which do not effect it. The plant might have helped you yet there could also have been a reduction of stress, physical activity or illness involved.

Also please stay in this forum over the long haul and report your progress. I'm talking 8-15 years if you can.

It would really help. I've seen so many cures short term:
Sheldon, said 'cure' for a long time (was not a cure for me and many others); one guy had a 'cure' of using vitamin E enema's; another guy (from Brooklyn?) had a 'cure' of using an enema (stew) of garlic and herbs 3 times a day; SCD came out as a cure; AMP Molocure came out as a cure then changed names, added disclaimers and just uses testimonials; one guy reported something worked (really excited) and only ate salmon and reported progress but quickly dropped off that cure. I understand their eagerness to share but over the long term I don't hear what happened and it doesn't usually help others.

Looking at signatures (meds and supplements folks list) you'll see a lot of natural, anti-inflammatories which have shown to have some statistical relevance in rats and even small clinical trials wrt inflammation in general. All the different things just didn't come onto the UC scene at once. Aloe Vera, Boswellia, omega-3's, turmeric, slippery elm, spinach, sesame seeds (none are cures; none help me when flaring yet many report they help - nobody says they're cures)

Only profit motive? is that true for research in FTM, pig whipworm, VSL#3? Is there not profit in selling naturals like this plant (look at all the things the plant reports to help from obesity to blocked arteries to all kinds of gastric disorders)

'the answer': thanks for posting and trying to help and please be careful trying to convince folks off their prescription meds until you have more reliable data. they could really get ill.

The only cure thus far is surgery; removal of the colon.

It's just not true that doctors don't want a cure.

If this is the cure then I'll be very upset at CCFA, Mayo and all the other North American, Asian, European, Australian and other government, university and medical researchers in those regions trying to find the cure or cures and this was not looked into further.

The OP should never have used the word "cure". Even he admits that sometimes he gets symptoms again and drinks more nopal. There actually is a good bit of research going on about nopal and it's anti inflammatory properties. I read a lot about this before I started drinking it.

Just like every supplement out there -- it may help some people and not do anything for others. I suspect that if you have very mild symptoms of loose stools and frequency nopal could very well be enough to get you into remission along with your regular meds. For me it's not quite been enough as I still see blood a few times a week. It has done wonders for the consistency and frequency of my BMs though so I know it does something.

I just had a CRP blood test and the levels are back in the normal range. I am now .78 and in July near the beginning of this flare (when I had lots of blood and very soft stools) it was 1.23. (Depending on the way CRP levels are reported, this equates to 7.8 and 12.3 respectively on other CRP measures.) While I am happy the levels show decreased inflammation, I know there has to be some still there because of the blood. Will be discussing with my dr on Friday to see if I should give it more time or move up the med ladder. I'd like to give it more time, but am very worried with how long this has been going on so will see what the dr says. This is a second opinion appointment at a research med center so not really sure what his thought will be. My regular GI wants me to move to methotrexate or Humira -- both have possible side effects that could interfere with my quality of life so not keen to jump into that. But will if I absolutely need to. I know I can't keep letting this simmer and many people take these drugs with no problems. Hard decision to make. There are several drugs than can take a few months to induce full remission. Just wondering if given another month or so if nopal would be the same. I've been drinking it for a little over a month now.

Just drank my first glass of Nopal water today...is it supposed to help a rumbling tummy?  Feels a little rumbly after I drank and still a few hours later.  I forgot to keep the nopal leaves in the pitcher, I drained the water and put in a another container...is that a big deal that I did not keep the water in the leaves?  I did soak overnight, but I drained the next morning...

Great, I will finish this pitcher and start another one and keep all of the goods in with the water until I'm done.  How much do you drink per day?  I was going to do 8oz in the AM and 8oz in the PM..I assume this is enough.  I take Prednisone and a BC pill in the AM, do you know if it's a good idea to take those pills first and then wait to drink the water?  Don't want anything to interact with the drugs I'm taking.   I have read that Nopal can cause D and loose stools...I assume that is if you are eating the pads (since they are full of fiber) versus just drinking the water...does anyone have any thoughts on that topic?

UPDATE ON NOPAL EFFECT:
After being on Home Made Nopal Juice for 3 months and Apriso 2 tabs a day, Yesterday I had follow up colonoscpy...RESULT: Inflammation cleared almost 95 %. Only, some inflammation visible in rectal area.
Biposy results showed minor, microscopic inflammation. Symptoms have been absent for last 2 months.
G.I prescribed Canasa Suppository to clear minor rectal inflammation.
I don't know how much Nopal played the role...but I suspect It certainly did help as I could heal so well with only 2 tabs of Apriso. I plan to continue with my glassful of Nopal juice each morning.

Hello all-

Quick question...I have been drinking the NOPAL water for about 3-4 days now about 8-16 OZ per day.  As I get towards the end of my first pitcher of water it becomes VERY gel like whereas the first days of water were thick but not like drinking gel!  I know it's supposed to get thicker, was wondering if the thicker it is, the better?  Or should I make a new pitcher sooner so as not to drink the really thick stuff....thanks!

Thanks- I will drink all of the gel! Weird texture but if it helps I will do it! I'm about 125 pounds so I assume 8-16 oz per day is a good amount? I'm making my second pitcher tonight!

haha, i used to to ea Okra before UC and never had any problems but after uc i tired to eat it once again (while in remission),and for the last time.

i basically spent the next two days on the throne.

Well, I didn't prepare it the same way, I just tossed the entire leaf with the pricks removed into the blender and added some water. Tasted OK, didn't really do anything for me in terms of helping with decrease my frequency or urgency. The placebo effect can really convince you its working, you in the long term it's useless IMO
