I'm seeing very mixed opinions here thank you all though for the comments / input.
I'm still not really sure how severe exactly taking prednisone once a year is doing to my body.
The consensus from this thread appears to be: don't worry about it now, you are definitely not a candidate for surgery. Honestly I don't think I need surgery either, but I'm wondering how much damage taking prednisone is doing to me if I take it once a year, or if its okay to take it once a year. That is what I'm still unclear about.
Sorry to be "that person", but most people here are being wildly optimistic!
I took a course of Pred every year for a few years, then ended up with an acute relapse that saw me in hospital for two weeks. After that, I could not get off Pred without ending up back in hospital again a few weeks or even days later. Put up with that for about
18 months, then booked surgery.
Now it does not follow that you will follow a similar course. Doesn't sound like you've tried many other meds yet, for one thing, whereas I ran the gamut of meds from a to z. But you should stop taking Pred every year. Even if it isn't doing you any damage at the moment, you'll be building up tolerance to it every time you take it, until eventually it stops being the miracle drug and either stops working altogether or you cannot get off it without flaring straight up again.
It really is a drug which should be used as sparingly as possible. Ideally I'd say 'never', but I know nobody would go along with that.
PS: The amount of damage is variable. Pred will **** everyone up in the end, but it seems to affect some people sooner than it does others. I escaped relatively unscathed, with only oste
openia (the precursor to osteoporosis) to show for all my time on Pred.
