Want to get reassessed for Ulcerative Colitis.

about 18 months ago I was diagnosed with mild ulcerative colitis (proctitis) after a biopsy was taken during a colonoscopy. I have been on a course of 1mg Salofalk taken once a day in the evening before bed. I have no symptoms other than fresh blood on the toilet paper and some in the toilet water. I have no diarrhoea or blood in the stool, pains, cramps or mad urgency to go. I have a bowl movement about twice a day and there's usually more blood in the second visit. The Salofalk doesn't seem to be having much of an effect and I've read that it can cause hemorrhoids. I have been using them everyday for some months and have felt a small lump when inserting the suppository which could be a hemorrhoid. My symptoms seem to get worse when I go to the gym and lift weights. Could this just be a case of hemorrhoids?

Does anyone have a similar experience to this? It's really frustrating because I don't want to keep taking the Salofalk if it's not achieving anything and perhaps causing the bleeding. I am scheduled to see a new consultant on in May.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It's quite common to have both, actually. If you do have a hemorrhoid (with or without UC), try to keep your stools soft so they can pass without straining. If you have constipation usually, a fiber supplement and ample water intake will help with this.

Thanks for the responses guys. I've been thinking about stopping the Salofalk for a week or two to see if this stops the bleeding, do you think this is good idea or should I just continue to take it daily until my appt in May?

Well if you come off of it, it could make it worse. Id wait until you see your GI UNLESS you realize the salofalk is causing an issue (i.e. your allergic to mesalamines)

It's possible you're not on enough medication.

Do you have a copy of your biopsies report?
