your 2nd opinion said...
Enemas / suppositories are not an option either because my UC affects my entire colon...
I actually asked the dr about rectal meds today... and he told me that was mostly for those with left-sided UC and since mine is the entire colon, it would not work for me.
If this is the advice from your 2nd opinion then I recommend getting a 3rd opinion. Rectal meds are the most effective treatment for all colitis, with the fewest side effects. First of all inflammation begins and starts at the bottom of the colon, (your dr should have known that), and many on this forum with pancolitis have been placed into remission with a combination of oral and rectal meds.
Remicade might be necessary only if nothing else works. You must bring down the inflammation, but I would only go for that option as a last resort. The last thing you need is to suppress your immune system.
There is a show on American cable TV call the
Monsters Inside Us, it is about
parasites. It makes me think twice before ever eating raw sushi again. Anyway I don't know how many shows talked about
parasites, worms, fungus, and bacteria in our everyday environment that are for the most part are harmless to those of us with normal immune systems, but can easily infect someone whose immune system is compromised.
I would first try oral and rectal mesalamines before trying something stronger. The side effects of mesalamines are mild enough to use every day to keep your inflammation in check. No more 18 years of chronic inflammation.
