Question about snacking at night

After everyone does their nightly medications (enemas, pills, ect.) does anyone snack or are you done for the night?

I ask because sometimes I like to snack at night after my meds but I might have to stop it because it bothers my stomach by morning.

Do you mean your meds make you hungry?

Apparently it's not advisable for anyone to eat in the three hours prior to going to bed, it's not good for digestion.

No, my meds don't make me hungry. Sometimes when I'm in bed watching TV I want to snack but it's after I take all my meds. I don't make a habit of eating or snacking before bed but sometimes I just want a snack.

I was just wondering if this bothers anyone's digestion after taking medications.

I would think it was bothersome to my digestive system so I haven't done it since we stopped entertaining quite regularly on the weekends years and years ago so now I try to never eat anything passed 8 pm unless we're entertaining which luckily doesn't happen very much at all especially like it used to. I can't say it ever made a huge improvement with my CD when I was flaring but it certainly didn't help it any either.

Now my IBD is in remission but due to the IBS I still pay close attention never to eat past 8 pm. It's easier now that I start eating earlier in the day which I never did but for the last few months is when I started actually feeling hungry in the mornings so I eat small amounts throughout the day and it seems to aid with being able to stop eating once 8 pm rolls around.

There's a lot of playing around with having bowel issues, the GI tract is so darned finicky it's not even funny, like you're darned if you do and you're darned if you don't...lose-lose situation when you have bowel problems.

this is my great problem. I have a bad habit of eating (and quite a lot) around midnight as i tend to go to sleep very late. I think it's unhealthy and i want to change it but when i'm hungry i don't think logically :)

Ewa, yikes that is a bad habit...I hope you can find a way to break it...don't know if it will necessarily heal you but it might cause you less grief with your UC possibly.

You probably don't want to eat at all after using an enema, eating triggers the gastrocolic reflex so you're more likely to need to have a bowel movement after eating than if you go straight to bed. Other than that I'd say it's different strokes for different folks.

Eating in bed while watching late-night TV is a bad idea unless one has an iron gut! Ditto RE Pluot's comment. Besides, don't you then have to get up again to brush your teeth/floss? (LOL) Bad girl! / Old Hat (34 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

Sometimes I get the craving for fritos corn chips. Yes, that is my downfall. I'm obsessed with them. I don't eat in bed a lot but every now and again I get bad cravings for the corn chips. I'd say I get the cravings maybe twice a month.

Old Hat: yes, then I have to brush my teeth again..LOL

I have never had an issue eating at night and taking meds but depending on what I eat, if I'm laying down to sleep soon afterward it will aggravate my reflux.

pb4 - i'll follow your example and stop prowling through my fridge in search of prohibited snacks past 8 p.m. :)

Good luck Ewa, my trick was to have more frequent but small meals/snacks throughout the day to aid me with stopping by 8 pm, if I happen to feel a bit of hunger because I just didn't feel like eating as often through the day then I'll have an herbal tea and that usually does the trick for me.

herbal tea sounds great but the trick it would do for me would be making me go to the bathroom all through the night :) However today i've been testing herbal tea Melissa Officinalis because i've read it's very good for uc (it prevents bad fermentation and slows the peristalsis) and as yet (it's almost 1 a.m.), no issues at all. This question might be getting us OT a bit, but speaking of needing to brush your teeth again and also speaking of herbal tea: I like to brush my teeth after I finish eating for the night to help me resist snacking throughout the evening. However, I also sometimes like to have some herbal tea (like Sleepytime) before bed to help me wind down. Would you brush your teeth again after that? (I don't put anything in my tea, no milk or sugar/honey, etc).

I'm really bad with this too. I always get hungry at night for no reason. I go to bed late too....usually well pas midnight. I tend to eat chips or whatever I can scrounge up. Horrible habit....but I also don't notice that I feel much better when I dont do it.

I think partially it's my weird way of telling my stomach "screw you colon, I'll eat what and when I want!".

Of course then I wake up and my colon says "oh yea watch this - you better start running to the bathroom now boy!".

UCHater: LOL!!! YES! If I snack at night, the next morning I say to myself: WHY! Why did I do that!!
