Flaring again..what now?

Is it the size of the pill that's hard to swallow? Because you could cut it in half probably. Or ask if you can crush them and put them in yogurt or something.

Balsalazide you can remove from the capsules (the gell cap halves can be easily pulled apart) and pour over yogurt, apple sauce, and so on, and it's much easier for those having swallowing issues with big pills.

Immunosuppressive medications (Imuran, 6mp, aza) are much, much safer than living with constant uc inflammation for a prolonged period of time (as colorectal cancer risks skyrocket in untreated, long-term inflammation). Immunosuppressive medications have very rare side effects (they are not prednisone), what exactly worries you about immunosuppressive medications?

A lot of these meds depend on the coating to get them to the colon so having to squash them up would be tough. I have never had a med I could open or chew. I have opened some up and mixed them in water to squirt up my rear, but none that I ingested orally. Those Balsalazide ones are pretty big.

Reminder folks, Balsalazide isn't meslamine so there's no delayed-release coating. Rather, your intestinal bacterium breaks Balsalazide molecules into meslamine molecules once it arrives at the targeted spot.
