Hi, hoping someone can advise. I have left sided UC and just at the end of a nearly two year flare. I have been prescribed antibiotics thus week and today I have very bad pain on left side of my colon where it is often worse when I am ill. I have never had such pain there though and the doctor is just telling me to take paracetamol. I am waiting to hear back from the hospital but worried they wont take it seriously.

Hey Jessica, I had a similar experience with Rifaximin 550mg 3x/day. Upon withdrawal after taking it for a week or so, I was having severe pain. It still persists to this day.

Do you feel nausea/wake up in the middle of the night and go multiple times in the morning/night?

Hi there, thanks for replying. Yes I do have nausea and have started going a lot first thing in the morning. The hospital were rubbish today and just complained that I had left two messages instead of one and that they cant advise anything without another colonoscopy but they had forgotten to do my referral anyway....I have started taking more vsl3 probiotics as I am thinking that antibiotics destroy the good bacteria so it might help to replace them and control the symptoms. Have you tried them? The dose is really high and they seem to make some difference to my UC.

I hate being in the hospital, I hope it's not too bad there!

I tried VSL in the past and I think it did help, but it was very expensive and I stopped it. I have to start it again actually. In fact, out of all the various brands of probiotics I've tried, online and from stores, VSL seemed to be the most effective.

How many times are you going a day? Are you bleeding?

When the Dr gave me Cipro, I got worse with bloodier diarrhea. Rifaximin seemed to help but I can't tell if it's for real or just the placebo effect, but the withdrawal felt painful. Then again, every day is pain ful for me, so I don't know.

Hopefully doubling up on your probiotics will help. You should probably continue with the double dose for a week or so after you stop the antibiotics to get the good bacteria built back up. How long do you need to be on antis?

Hi both, I agree the probiotic is expensive. There are discount coupons on the internet with some companies which can help. I am doubling up and hope the flare wont take off any more, yeah going more in the morning but no bleeding so that is something. Have just a couple of days on the antibiotics left so fingers crossed.....thanks for your help

Jessa33, what UC meds are you on? Can you increase those while you get past the abx?

Hi Kazbern, I take six pentasa mesalasine tablets a day plus the suppositories twice a day. That's good thinking, I could go back up to eight as that is the maximum although sometimes I think eight gives me more symptoms so its tricky. Might be an idea to do for a couple of weeks. I cant have the immunosuppressant drug they usually encourage in the uk as not enough of a certain enzyme for it to be a good idea so trying to work with the pentasa.....
