A new Curry house opened up near where I live, and I went last night, of course I knew it was risky, but I needed to eat something nice, something that I really wanted for a change! I only ordered a mild curry, with garlic nan and it was fantastic!....BUT I am paying for it dearly today, I've spent most of the morning on the toilet, and I've had blood for the first time in two weeks....it seems I can't divert from my eating plan. I won't be doing that again! nono

that's odd, curries & other Indian food never bothered me.. I chalked it up to the massive amounts of turmeric generally used. Indian foods have always been some of my safe bets. Plus, I love it!

Eva, your fortunate, you really are.....I also lOVE curry, and yet I somehow knew it was going to be risky for me, and I was right! its a shame really as it was the first time in a long time that I had really enjoyed eating a meal.

Curry aaaaand garlic are very hazardous to me!! I would have been pooping non stop. It sucks. All the tasty things seem to be on the forbidden lust list mad

Sorry it bothered you. What happens if you cook the same stuff at home?

My mom (also with UC, in remission) was given a long list of foods to avoid, which I followed too and added in one at a time, so far so good.
One thing sure though, I do not eat ANYTHING outside. I will skip food if it needs, but I will eat ONLY at home. Simple rule, if its not cooked in my kitchen, I am not eating it.

Delta..I've made my own curry at home with no problems...but its not quite the same as eating in a proper Indian restaurant. I also never eat anything outside as a rule, this was a one off treat, which I wont be repeating... smilewinkgrin

honestly, i'm a huge curry fan!! i make it all the time but seriously have to scale back when recipes call for 4 tbsp. i usually do half that after learning my lesson haha. i made a curry mayo last night to eat on top of bacon covered meatloaf. it was INSANE.

Be careful with restaurants! They use wheat starch or flour to thicken their sauces. Curry, pure curry, without chilis should be supportive to the gut - as long as it is cooked the "long way" and without pre-packaged mixes. Often they also incorporate sugar into the dishes - just to raise the hint of sweetness if the tomatoes aren't very ripe or good quality.

I agree with the above... I think the curry made in restaurants these days is not the curry Indians typically eat, so you have to factor that in to the symptoms you get. I would ask for a list of ingredients and see if they put msg or any other additive that is problematic for the gut.

The ingredients in authentic Indian cusine generally consist of strong anti-inflammatory and disease fighting ones like turmeric, hing, coriander, ghee, etc. I think curry is one of those special foods that heals UC damage.

Sorry to hear of your pain. My gut loves homemade curry with garam masala (store-bought at health food store) but I'm going to experiment with making my own curry mix, I have all the ingredients. I would not order curry in a restaurant, who knows what is in it that a sensitive gut will hate.

When I eat out I only order food I can identify and cannot be fabricated. Baked potato not mashed, in other words. Steak not hamburger. Identifiable whole foods are safest.

So much to learn about Indian food. I always head off to my local indian food restaurant when I start flaring as I find all those spices to be easy on my gut. I now know they must cook it the long way as I have only had good experiences with it, if it doesn't help the flare it sure has never harmed it either. So sorry, I would be beside myself today if that were me.

Hey folks this is an old post and since posting this I have been back to that restaurant numerous times and have spoken with the owner, and what a lovely chap he is too! Basically I had a chat with him and explained my situation and he has given me some different options from his menu which he said I should be fine with, and he was right! I have eaten there about once a month with no problems at all since then, such a relief! my main concern was what they were using to thicken their wonderful sauces, and for some of the dishes he explained that they actually use cashew nut paste!!

Anyway Indian food is my favorite, and just knowing that I can have a treat every now and then makes me feel so happy, also the owner appears to always be there whenever I go, and that fills me with confidence as he obviously likes to keep an eye on his kitchen and business.

I know exactly which foods to avoid at each different Indian restaurant near me and they are not all the same. Some use MSG and I can't handle it.

Saag spinach dish kills me in one restaurant as the cook uses too much garlic and heavy cream.

I always go for the fresh made rice over the day old they mix with vegetables and seasonings.

Indian dishes cook their vegetables very well which is easier for me to digest.

The yogurt is great, I use the pickled mango and I love about every dish. I avoid the green chutney and red (hot pepper) sauce but I loved the fried vegetables with masala.

I might go there tomorrow. Over user of garlic gives me diarrhea

I am a major curry eater. Actually, I hadn't had it in a while and I was doing well so I was scared to eat it because, of course, I was thinking - hmm, maybe the curry was making me worse. I would like to report that I scarfed down some curry and nothing bad came of it, only good things, like a yummy belly full of curry. I just can't get enough... I love saag too.
